  • Anasazi
  • These Indians built their homes in the sides of
    mesas. Because of this they were known as cliff
    dwellers.
  • The Anasazi were farmers. They grew corn, beans,
    and squash.
  • For fun these Native Americans would make clay
    pots and weave baskets.

  • Hopi
  • The Hopi Native Americans believed in many Gods.
    They used dolls called Kachinas to talk to the
    Gods.
  • These Native Americans were also farmers. They
    enjoyed growing corn, squash, and beans.
  • Hopi women made beautiful baskets, jewelry, and
    clay pots.

  • Makah
  • The Makah lived in what is now Washington.
  • These Native Americans were great whale hunters.
    Every part of the whale was used. The skin and
    meat were eaten, the fat was used for oil, and
    the tendons were used to make rope.
  • For crafts, the Makah would spend many hours
    making baskets and wood boxes.

  • Chinook
  • The Chinook depended on the forests for shelter.
  • Every house was made of wood and all villages
    faced the water source.
  • The Chinooks loved to make totem poles.
  • They used canoes as means of transportation to
    get across the rivers and lakes.

  • Cheyenne
  • The Cheyenne hunted buffalo for food, shelter,
    and clothing.
  • These Native Americans followed the buffalos
    migration patterns. They packed up and moved
    every time the buffalo did.
  • Because of this they needed a type of house that
    was easy to assemble. So they built the tepee.

  • Sioux
  • The Sioux also lived in tepees and followed the
    buffalo.
  • They used the horns of the buffalo for spoons,
    cups, and toys.
  • Powwows were one of the Siouxs religious
    ceremonies. One powwow was called the Sun Dance.
    These ceremony lasted four days in the summer
    and thought to have brought the Sioux good luck.

  • Iroquois
  • The Iroquois lived in what we now know as New
    York.
  • These Native Americans lived in houses called
    wigwams and longhouses.
  • The Iroquois used pelts of animals for clothing.
    The main animal in which they hunted for food and
    clothing was deer.

  • The Cherokee Native Americans lived in what is
    now known as Tennessee and Georgia.
  • These Native Americans homes were called wattles
    and daubs.
  • The Cherokee, like the Iroquois, also hunted
    small animals such as deer, rabbits, and bear.
  • The Cherokee Native American tribes were known as
    the most civilized tribe of North America.
