Activities
1.) Have the students put the current ten largest
tribes in order based on population size. Then,
have the students research the ten largest tribes
from 100 years ago and put them in order. 2.)
Have the class make blankets by giving them
geometric shapes. They should use the shapes to
make decorative blankets like the Native
Americans did. 3.) In another activity, students
will make up a rain dance. For this strand, they
should write down the directions to their dance
and read them to the class.

3.) Students are assigned a tribe to research.
They should make a symbol representing this tribe
and draw it on sandpaper. The symbols should
then be used to make an ancestor quilt. 4.)
Students create a ceremonial face make using a
paper plate, feathers, and construction paper.

1.) Have students come up with Native American
names that describe themselves. Give them
examples like, Reads Like Fire or Writes Fine
with Stick.
2.) Have students read aloud Native American
tales. Allow them to choose a tale to illustrate
and share.
3.) Read The Turtle Story to the class. Have
them write their own tale about a Native American
tribe. These tales should provide an explanation
for a natural phenomena.

4.) Divide the class into groups and have each
group estimate the amount of kernels on a corn
cob. Then have a group counter count the actual
number to see whos closest.
5.) Have the students create a rain dance and
teach it to the class.

highest population of Native Americans according
to the 1990 census.
2.) Discuss the Cherokee Indians. Investigate
their location, migration, population, personal
experiences, and relations with the Europeans.
Have the class record their findings.
3.) Have the students construct a Venn Diagram of
how they meet their needs compared to how Native
Americans met their needs.

4.) Have the class pretend that they are Chumash
children. Have them write a letter to someone
describing where they live, climate, and what
they eat.
5.) Use the book Arrow to the Sun to illustrate a
Native American pueblo. Have the class write
about how a pueblo compares to an American home.

1.) Assign each student a poem out of the book
The Desert is Theirs. Have the students
illustrate them and put them all in a class book.
2.) Have the class create a mural of a Chumash
Village with paint. Have them include a Pow Wow
Circle.
3.) Make succatash and have the students try it.
Conduct a class vote regarding how many liked it
versus how many disliked it.

4.) Have the students construct a bulletin board
displaying Native American tribes and their
distinguishing features. They should include
housing, food, travel, government, etc.
5.) Ask the students to write a narrative story
from the perspective of a Native American Indian
Chief. Encourage them to write about the
problems they face and how they solve them.

1.) Have the students make a class book based on
the book, The Gift of the Sacred Dog. Have the
students decided who will write and illustrate
each page.
2.) Discuss how sharing is emphasized in The
Desert is Theirs. Engage the class in a
discussion of how they share the earth with the
plants and animals today.
3.) Ask the class to create their own Pow Wow
Circle in groups, and dramatize a problem that
their tribe is facing. Have the group brainstorm
to find a solution.

act out a part of the book Arrow to the Sun.
Have them elect who will play each role.
5.) After reading The Legend of the Indian
Paintbrush, break the class into groups and have
each group put strips of paper describing events

Paintbrush and watch the video. Have the
students look for sililarities and differences,
and then write about which they liked better.
2.) Have the students build a Native American
village.
3.) Have the class design a costume or jewelry
worn by Native Americans. Have them use
materials found in the environment.

4.) Have the class create ceremonial rattles
using milk cartons and beans. Have them decorate
their rattles.
5.) Have the class write a story from the
perspective of a Native American child. Ask them
to describe what chores they do and how they meet
their needs.

students make a chart comparing their lives to
Annies.
