INTRODUCTION
  • We learnt in the pervious lesson that Raffles
came to Singapore and set up the trading port.
Farquhar invited migrants to come into Singapore.
  • Because of this the population in Singapore
    changed.
  • Raffles then created a Raffles Town Plan for the
    population to settle down.

3
INTRODUCTION
  • So we will learn about what population is about.
  • We will also learn about what a settlement is.
  • We will also learn about Raffles Town Plan
  • Finally, we will learn about the population and
settlement of today in Singapore .

POPULATION
  • Population Growth Change in population size
  • Causes of Population Growth
  • - Birth Rate
  • - Death Rate
  • - Migration

6
POPULATION
  • However, when population grows, it does not mean
they would be evenly spread out (Population
    Distribution).
  • Population at different places of same size are
    of different numbers (Population Density).
  • Population Distribution and Density can be
    influenced by
  • - Physical Environment
  • E.g. -Mountains, Rivers, Desert
  • - Availability of water, food, resources
  • - Climate
  • - Human Environment
  • E.g. - technology, skills, tools

7
Fast Population Growth
  • Causes
  • Better medical care
  • Better Hygiene
  • --- this cause people to live longer
  • --- thus causes low death rate
  • Lack of family planning
  • Early marriage
  • Preference for son
  • Need for farm labour
  • --- this causes people to give birth to children
  • --- thus causes high birth rate

8
Fast Population Growth
  • Consequences
  • Higher demand for resources
  • Higher demand for housing
  • Higher demand for education
  • Higher demand for jobs
  • Environmental Problems
  • Control Measures
  • Education on family planning
  • Incentives and penalties

9
Slow Population Growth
  • Causes
  • Higher standards of hygiene
  • Better Nutrition
  • Better Medical and Health care
  • -- people live long and fewer babies born
  • -- low death rates
  • later Marriages
  • fewer Marriages
  • Preference for smaller families
  • -- low birth rates

10
Slow Population Growth
  • Consequences
  • Ageing population
  • Higher taxes
  • Smaller talent pool
  • Control Measures
  • Encouraging marriage and childbirth
  • Meeting the needs of the elderly
  • Building special facilities
  • Helping the elderly keep healthy
  • Encouraging families to look after elderly
  • Extending working life
  • Encouraging financial planning

11
Settlements
  • A settlement is a place where people live and
    carry out activities.
  • Whether a settlement is rural or urban depends
    on
  • - population size and density
  • - main function
  • - amenities
  • - way of life

12
Settlement Patterns
  • Dispersed
  • Buildings are built far apart
  • Usually due to physical environment
  • Or due to farming, where large areas of farms are
    between different houses.

13
Settlement Patterns
  • Linear Settlement
  • houses are located along either sides of
transport routes, e.g. roads, railways, rivers
  • This is because residents depend on the transport
    system
  • People may also depend on it for livelihood, e.g.
    fishing

14
Settlement Patterns
  • Linear Settlement
  • The Raffles Town Plan is a Linear Settlement as
houses are planned on either sides of straight
    roads.

Linear Roads
15
  • Raffles Town Plan
  • While the plan was a linear settlement
  • It also segregated all the migrants coming from
    different countries

Chulia Kampong (now known as Little India) -
Indians
Chinatown - Chinese
Kampong Glam - Malays
European Town (Now known as North Bridge Road -
Europeans
Commercial Square (Now known as Raffles Place)-
Centre of commerce

How much of this still looks like the initial
Raffles Town Plan?
18
Settlement Patterns
  • Nucleated Settlement
  • Buildings are clustered together
  • Usually at meeting points of transport routes
  • Or due to shortage of land

19
Globalisation
  • Migration did not stop after Raffles left.
  • Today, migration is even more common across all
    countries
  • Hence Singapore has become a cosmopolitan city
  • Cosmopolitan City place consist of people from
many different parts of the world

20
  • While Singapore has more people, our land space
does not increase hence increasing population
    density.
  • Our settlement patterns have also changed.
  • Many of our towns and the city area no longer
look like the initial Raffles Town Plan and has
    developed into nucleated settlements.

Can you spot familiar buildings or
structures? Can you see the nucleated settlement
pattern?
