ESTABLISHMENT

• ARMENIAN RESEARCH EDUCATIONAL NETWORKING
  ASSOCIATION (ARENA) FOUNDATION was founded in
  Yerevan on December 5, 2000.
• ARENA Foundation aims at establishment and
  administration of research and educational
  networks in Armenia. ARENA works towards
  enlarging exchange of information between
  scientific communities, libraries, museums, and
  other non-profit organizations.
• The Foundation would develop high-quality
  national and international information and
  telecommunication facilities to support research
  and educational projects in Armenia.

OBJECTIVES

• ARENA participates and promotes creation of
  information and telecommunication facilities in
  Armenia by using new technologies. This will
  unite Armenian research and educational
  organisations and institutions, non-commercial
  sources of information, museums and libraries
  within a single information network.
• The foundation provides access to global networks
  via uniting the Armenian scientific, academic and
  other non-profit sources in frames of the
  above-mentioned single information network.
• The unified network will enhance scientific and
  academic collaboration between Armenian Diaspora
  and homeland, and result in creation of joint
  information centres.

Virtual Silk Highway Project

• SILK Project brings highly cost effective, global
  Internet connectivity to the Caucasus and Central
  Asia through state-of-the-art satellite
  technology, thus creating a virtual Silk
  information highway
• The aim of the SILK Project is to increase
  significantly the exchange of information with,
  and between, academic and educational
  institutions of Caucasus and Central Asia

• Goal
• The goal of the Project is in assistance with
  UNDP and OSI AF Armenia to create research and
  educational information network, for the
  provision of access to civil society
  organisations - Universities, educational
  organizations, libraries - in a legally and
  economically unfavourable environment for
  reliable and free information flow and to deliver
  content, i.e. knowledge and information, in a
  transparent and accessible manner
