Title: THE SERVANTHOOD CONNECTION

1
THE SERVANTHOOD CONNECTION
  • Presented by
  • Diaconal Council for Servant Ministry
  • Diocese of Colorado

2
What is Servanthood?
  • From the GospelMatthew 2531-46
  • Come, you who are blessed by my father take
your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you
since the creation of the world. For I was
hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was
thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I
was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed
clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you
looked after me, I was in prison and you came to
    visit me.
  • I tell you the truth, whatever you did for
one of the least of these brothers of mine, you
    did for me.

3
What is Servanthood?
  • In The Baptismal Covenant, we commit ourselves to
    Christ
  • Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons,
    loving your neighbor as yourself?
  • Will you strive for justice and peace among all
people, and respect the dignity of every human
    being?

4
What is Servanthood?
  • Servanthood is not an act, it is a way of
being. Servanthood is the fundamental posture of
divine relationship. This posture, this way of
beingheart, mind, soul, and bodyis the
repentance, the metanoia (literally the change
of mind), the complete reorientation of our
being, to which Jesus calls us from the very
    beginning.
  • Bishop Robert ONeill
  • Diocesan Convention, 2005

5
What is Servanthood?
In this diocese, the posture of servanthood is
being engaged and lived out in many different
ways, most evidently in local parishes, in
ministries to the poor, the lonely, the sick, the
vulnerable. These are the tangible, concrete,
visible ways that we live out the call of God in
the world, that is how we manifest the divine
love of God and become the body of Christ
incarnate in this world.
Bishop Robert ONeill, Diocesan
Convention, 2005

6
What is The Servanthood Connection?

It is our diaconal response to Bishop ONeills
charge to undertake the task of looking at
all the ways we exercise our ministry of
servanthood to others across the diocese and to
make recommendations about how we can strengthen
and further develop that way of being, that
posture of divine love in the Diocese of
Colorado. Bishop Robert ONeill,
Diocesan Convention, 2005
7
What is The Servanthood Connection?

  • Can be accessed by churches and individuals

  • Facilitates the building of community
  • Provides practical tools for effective ministry

The Servanthood Connectionwill help us answer
these questions
  • Where do our lives intersect with others?
  • What needs exist in our community and beyond?
  • Where is servant ministry already taking place?
  • Do we need to sharpen our focus on how we
  • serve others?
  • What is our capacity to do and maintain servant
    ministry?

We must care for each other in brotherly
affection. We must be willing to use our excess
for the supply of others needs. We must delight
in each other, make others conditions our own,
rejoice together, mourn together, labor and
suffer together, always having before our eyes
our community as members of the same body and
bond. John Winthrop, City on a Hill
