• Gilbert Hitchens farm is a dairy farm. It
  raises and breeds cows to make dairy products.
  Located on the Cheshire Plain, its 450
  hectares of land has been managed for five
  generations. Gilbert has put in a lot of money,
  machinery and time to his farm to make it a
  success. However, he, like many other farmers, is
  not making as
• much profit as he expected due
• to recent changes in dairy
• farming.

• Gilbert Hitchens farm is a dairy farm.
• It can be classified as a Pastoral farm as it
  rears animals.
• It is also an Extensive farm. It uses minimum
  input for maximum output for an area of land.
• As it is a Commercial farm, it sells its
  outputs commercially.

Affect of Government Policies

• Diversity Farming less reliance on dairy
  farming, so milk will be less profitable, and
  there is more competition.
• Improve milk quality the higher the milk
  quality, the more subsidies received by the
  farmer.
• Increase quota cows had to be limited from
  160 to 100, less profit is made even though there
  is a subsidy.
• Leave fallow leaving infertile land, which
  costs no money, but farmers receive 200.
• Woodland farmers are given grants up to 190
  per hectare, but grants are higher for deciduous
  trees than coniferous.
• Wildlife scheme small grants given for
  re-planting hedgerows and re-creating ponds and
  wetlands.
• Recreation farmers can make their farms open
  for recreation, which increases chance of income.

Scientific Advances in Dairy Farming

• Olden day dairy farmers did not use machines to
  help them manage their cattle and farm.
• Today, farmers use a variety of equipment such as
  milking machines and refrigerated trucks.

Farmers invest in farming equipment as they are
convenient

• They are easy to manage
• They cut down manual labor
• They save time
• They are efficient
• They are also a long term investment as they are
  very durable

Conclusions

• Technology is helping farming to improve in
  efficiency and less labour costs
• BUT, farmers profit less from their produce, as
  they cannot go above their quota.
