  • Mixed farming refers to one of the agricultural
    systems (gaining popularity, nowadays) wherein
addition to growing crops and other agricultural
practices including dairy farming, poultry, or
bee keeping are practiced by a farmer.
  • In other words, mixed farming can be defined as a
system that involves using the same farm for
growing crops as well as rearing animals.

  • While mixed farming is dominantly practiced in
Europe, it is steadily becoming more popular
among farmers and farm owners involved in
agriculture based practices in Australia. It
started primarily for the purpose of personal
consumption however over time, people started
using it for commercial purposes, especially in
    the advanced countries.
  • In addition to mixed farming, the associated
farming systems can be classified into varied
ways depending on factors like the size of the
land, crop or animal types, geographical
distribution of land and orientation of market.

Disadvantages of Mixed Farming

  • Decreased level of production (tons per hectare
or milk per animal daily) as compared to
    monoculture systems
  • High risk of vulnerability, in cases where
dependency is on wild animal stock
  • Inappropriate climatic conditions (i.e. same
climate cannot be apt for all)
  • Rearing of young animals for replacing old
    animals
  • Makes controlling, monitoring, and maintenance
    procedures more difficult
  • Selective farming is not possible

  • As apparent from the aforementioned pros and
cons, the potential of crop-livestock farming
system cannot be taken lightly and ignored.
  • Conducted properly, it can provide farmers with a
range of products to sell at market and make
    hefty profits out of it.
