3AMWTPs Mission Status
- The U.S. Department of Energys Advanced Mixed
Waste Treatment Project is committed to safely,
compliantly and efficiently ship 65,000 cubic
meters of stored transuranic waste out of Idaho
to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico.
- Status through Sept. 1, 2006
- More than 12,000 cubic meters shipped since 2002
- 53,000 cubic meters to go
- All stored transuranic waste out of Idaho by
2012, - DOE Project Management Plan
- Settlement Agreement 2015 target
- Settlement Agreement 2018 compliance
4Treatment Processes
- Boxes
- Emptied, waste is identified and sorted
- Packaged into sacrificial drums
- Sacrificial drums are crushed into pucks
- Approx. 5-6 pucks packed into 100 gallon drums
- Shipped out of Idaho
- Drums
- Sorted and identified
- Shipped out of Idaho
Best shipping value is compacted pucks placed
into 100 gallon drums

18Application
- Graded approach to documents required by the
process depending on complexity and routine
nature of the work - First Level
- Operations exempt activities (may, or may not
require an AMOW) - Procedure development with the hazards identified
and mitigated - Approved Method of Work (AMOW), for routine
maintenance and operational activities (Similar
to general JSA and RWP combined) - Second Level
- Request for Permit to Work (RPTW) for minor work
activities meeting specific criteria - Third Level
- Permit to Work (PTW) for complex, abnormal,
and/or safety significant work activities - Incorporates worker involvement at all levels
19Key Positions
- Technical Expert (TE)
- Engineering, Nuclear/Criticality Safety, Quality
SPM, etc. - Performs hazard assessments as assigned
- Procedures/instructions, AMOWs, RPTWs, PTWs
- Worker
- Participates in hazard assessments
- Reviews, signs and follows applicable AMOWs
- Follows requirements documented on RPTWs
- Signs for acceptance and follows requirements
documented on PTWs
20Key Positions
- Radiological Shift Team Leader (RSTL)
- Defines radiological precautions and limitations
for AMOWs and PTWs - Industrial Safety/Industrial Hygiene
- Reviews and concurs with non-radiological hazards
and mitigations for AMOWs, RPTWs (as necessary),
and PTWs - Shift Manager (SM)
- Authorizes issuance of the AMOWs, RPTWs, and/or
PTWs - Safe System of Work Controller (SSWC)
