auspices of
  • Scientific Committee, Chair Prof. H Mooney (USA)
  • International Secretariat (France)
  • Core Project Offices (Sweden, USA, France)
  • Network Offices (NL, USA, Switzerland, Kenya)
  • National Committees a Regional Network (DIWPA)
  • Missions
  • - to promote an integrative biodiversity science
  • - to provide the scientific bases for the
    conservation sustainable use of biodiversity

ecoSERVICES Core Project
  • This Science Plan focuses on the ways in which
changes in biodiversity affect the functioning of
ecosystems, the delivery of ecosystem goods and
    services, and human well-being.
  • There are three Foci
  • Focus 1 Linking biodiversity to ecosystem
    functioningFocus 2 Linking ecosystem
functioning to provision of servicesFocus 3
Human responses to changes in ecosystem services

ecoSERVICES Science Plan FOCUS 3 Human
responses to changes in ecosystem services
  • 2. Ecosystem multi-functionality.
  • Aims to develop approaches for managing
    ecosystems for multiple ecosystem services
    simultaneously (as opposed to examining
    individual ecosystem processes in isolation).
  • Pre-proposal being developed in collaboration
with partners in the USA, Costa Rica, Chile,
    Brazil, India and South Africa
  • Project will map off-site delivery of ecosystem
services/disservices from a series of reference
sites, estimate the value of land taking the full
array of off-site services into account, and
    develop price-based mechanisms for encouraging
the socially optimal provision of services.

8
ecoSERVICES Scientific Meetings 2009
  • ecoSERVICES workshop on biodiversity information
and community based use of natural resources,
    12-19 June, Mexico City/Oaxaca, Mexico.
  • Organizer Rodolfo Dirzo
  • ecoSERVICES/CIB symposium on globalization,
    invasive species and national responses,
    DIVERSITAS OSC 2, 13-16 October 2009, Capetown,
    South Africa
  • Organizers Charles Perrings and Dave Richardson

bioGENESIS
10
Evolutionary responses to climate change
Yukon squirrel
Red squirrels have responded to a 2C mean
Apr-June temperature change by advancing the date
at which they give birth by almost 26 days in 26
years (matching peak spruce cone production)
Task 3.2. Evolution and climatic change
Bradshaw, W. and Holzapfel, C. 2007,
PNAS (bioGENESIS science plan)
11
Biodiversity and climate change
Model development for regional test cases
Migration - Tundra / boreal / temperate forest
biome shifts as affected by climate change Fire
- interactions between land use, climate and
vegetation structure. Can general models predict
regional differences? Herbivory - impacts on
vegetation structure model development and
data synthesis for Southern Africa Plasticity -
Assess the importance of acclimation, adaptation
and biodiversity in determining dieback of
Amazonian forest under future climate change
Multi-model regional analyses of the effects of
climate change on biome / vegetation structure
shifts - Common drivers data sets esp. climate
and land use - Common benchmarking data sets
experiments, paleo Need new people, agreement on
data sets, etc

Simulating Biome / Vegetation Structure Shifts

a new global partnership to help collect, manage,
analyse report data relating to the status of
    the worlds biodiversity

  • UNEP GC (Feb 09 gap analysis)
  • Next 2nd Intergov mtg (Oct 09)
  • Launch 2010?

16
Overall views from the scientific community
  • The scientific community is interested and
committed to IPBES (gap analysis delegations at
    Nairobi mtg)
  • Scientific organisations must be partners
  • IPBES should thus be intergovernmental and
    multistakeholder
  • Proper governance will be key to ensure
    scientific independance/quality
