American in space when he took a 15 minute
sub-orbital flight over the Pacific Ocean for 304
miles. Shepherd later recalled that he only had a
30 second view out of Mercury 3's window.

lunar surface. On July 20, 1969 commander

18-24, 1983) Her second flight was shuttle

6John Glenn blasted off in February of 1962. John
Glenn was the first American man in space, and
the first man ever to orbit the Earth. John Glen
orbited the Earth 3 times in 5 hours. He went
back to space in the Space Shuttle Columbia
mission of 1998. He became the oldest person ever
to enter space.

7Buzz joined NASA in October 1963, he served as a
capcom (capsule communicator) for Gemini 5 and
Gemini 10. His first space flight came on
November 11-15, 1966 when he piloted Gemini 12
the last of the Gemini missions.
