Title: MASONRY

1
MASONRY
2
Masonry
  • Masonry is the building of structures from
individual units laid in and bound together by
    mortar or concrete.
  • Common masonry materials include brick, stone,
    concrete block, and glass block.

3
Masonry Hazards
  • There are many safety hazards associated with
    masonry construction operations
  • Scaffolding
  • Improper Wall Bracing
  • Crystalline Silica Dust
  • Dangerous Tools and Equipment
  • Heavy and Hazardous Materials

4
Typical Injuries
  • Fall Injuries
  • Impact Injuries from Falling Materials and Tools
  • Eye Injuries
  • Respiratory Illnesses
  • Inflammation of the Skin
  • Impalement
  • Back Muscle Injuries
  • Death
  • 33 Construction Fatalities are Falls
  • 22 Construction Fatalities are Struck Bys

5
Fatality Case
  • An employee walked near a cinder block wall that
was 20 feet tall and had been constructed 3 days
    earlier.
  • The wall was not yet supported by the structure
and braces were not properly attached to the
    masonry wall.
  • A wind gust caused the wall to collapse and
    strike the employee.
  • He died of multiple injuries to the head and
    torso.
  • The area around the wall was not barricaded or
marked to warn of the hazard.

Fatality Case 2
  • Employee was working on the top level of the
    fourth section of a scaffold.
  • No guardrails were in place and the platform was
    not fully decked.
  • The employee was pulling plastic sheeting over a
masonry wall when he stepped off the planking.
  • He fell more than 20 feet, sustaining fatal
injuries to his head and neck.

OSHA REGULATIONS FOR MASONRY
11
Reinforcing Steel
  • All protruding reinforcing steel shall be guarded
to eliminate the hazard of impalement.
  • Steel for walls shall be supported to prevent
    overturning and collapse.

12
Concrete Buckets
  • No employee shall be allowed to ride concrete
    buckets.
  • No employee should be allowed to work under
buckets while they are being positioned.
  • Elevated buckets shall be routed so that the
fewest number of employees are exposed to the
    hazard of falling concrete buckets.

13
Concrete Buckets
14
Concrete Pumping
  • PPE shall be used by employees who are applying a
cement, sand, and water mixture through a
    pneumatic hose
  • Protective Head and Face Equipment.

15
Masonry Saws
  • Must be guarded with a semicircular enclosure
    over the blade.
  • Semicircular enclosure design must retain blade
    fragments.

16
Limited Access Zone
  • Shall be established whenever a wall is being
    constructed.

17
Limited Access Zone Criteria
  • Must be established before beginning construction
    of the wall.
  • Zone shall be equal to height of the wall plus
    four feet.
  • Must run the entire length of the wall.
  • Must be established on the unscaffolded side of
    the wall

18
Limited Access Zone
  • Only employees actively engaged in constructing
    the wall may enter.
  • Shall remain in place until the wall is
    adequately supported to prevent collapse.

19
Walls Taller than 8 Feet
  • Shall be adequately braced to prevent overturning
and to prevent collapse until permanent
supporting elements of the structure are in place
so that the wall cannot overturn or collapse.
  • Limited Access Zone shall remain until permanent
    support is in place.

20
Masonry Construction
  • Construction shall also meet requirements of
Subpart L Scaffolds and Subpart M Fall
    protection.

21
Masonry Common Sense
  • Wear eye protection when cutting block.
  • Wear hard hats at all times to prevent injury
    from falling objects.
  • Wear respiratory protection when cutting block or
when working with cement and lime to prevent
    inhaling crystalline silica.
  • Limit the weight of materials that you pick up.
