ANALYSIS OF AN EXCELLENT CASE FOR THE
ACTIVITIES OF TERRITORIAL ANIMATION AND
PROMOTION OF MULTICULTURALISM
MUNICIPAL LIBRARY OF CAMPOSAMPIERO (PD)
2CAMPOSAMPIERO is a small town situated about 20
km from Padua
3Its Library serves a body of 11.325 users 936
of them are made up of immigrants who moved to
Italy with their family and now are working in
factories in the territory.
4- This is a small Library whit very reduced staff
- one full-time librarian
- one part-time library director
- one unpaid apprentice or "stagiaire"
Particular interest has just been arisen by the
initiatives promoted in order to encourage
multiculturalism and territorial activity.
5MULTICULTURALISM ACTIVITIES
PROGETTO LETTURA (Reading Project)
The aim of the Project consists of promoting and
developing reading as a motivated approach to a
plurality of texts and a meeting with other
cultures.
- At the realization of this Project, co-operate
- all the schools of Camposampiero the nursery,
public and private infant, elementary and
comprehensive schools - the socio-educative centre (an afternoon centre
where children in difficulties are followed) - the Ceod San Francesco which takes care of
handicapped children.
6MULTICULTURALISM ACTIVITIES
MATTINE DESTATE IN BIBLIOTECA (Summer morning
at the Library)
The aim of this project was to improve childrens
linguistic competence through play.
Every working morning in July was made a specific
path with books for foreign children with a
teacher.
This project was supported and strongly wished
for by the Culture Counsellorship.
7The use of the library from boys and girls (from
5 to 12 years) grows very rapidly, and in
particular with reference to foreign children.
These Projects produced remarkable and various
positive effects, also noticed by the
Headmistresses of the schools involved, as they
favoured the foreign childrens involvement and
participation also to other activities planned by
the library on the territory.
The gratuitousness of the service offered was an
important aspect for the success of the activity
8ACTIVITIES of TERRITORIAL ANIMATION
The attention to the territory emerges from a
range of activities for the promotion of the
local literature and also from other initiatives
such as the training meetings for parents on the
theme The child and the book or reading,
theatre and music shows and many courses.
Then, the Library organizes many cultural trips
and visits.
9ACTIVITIES of TERRITORIAL ANIMATION
PROMOTION OF LOCAL AUTHORS AND CULTURE
Intense is the promotion of the local authors,
also favouring reading at High Schools in the
territory.
An interesting activity among the latest has
involved a 19-year girl from Santa Giustina in
Colle, a village 3 km from Camposampiero, who won
the 2003 Campiello Prize for the Young.
Great interest is shown to the local authors to
allow the promotion of local culture (knowledge
and historical traditions), involving most of all
old authors who can also be historians, tellers
or poets.
10ACTIVITIES of TERRITORIAL ANIMATION
SPARE TIME UNIVERSITY
This initiative has been existing for 12 years,
and the activities take place in two periods,
October-December and January-May. There are about
45 memberships. It is as-a-matter-of-fact an
University for the elderly.
The Library is the organizational secretariat of
this activity.
11CONCLUSIVE REMARKS
- At the moment we cannot say that the increase in
the foreign childrens attendance has had an
influence on their parents, and thus on the adult
level of the immigrant population. The foreign
adults use the services offered by the library
much less than the children (1 out of ten).
2. The Library is included in a local net of
libraries.
12CONCLUSIVE REMARKS
3. The activity of the library is therefore
characterized by a close co-operation and synergy
with schools, associations and other
organizations in the territory.
In this view, in accordance with the new
norms on the Committees for library Management,
the persons in charge want to find a way to
involve the heads of the various cultural
associations, in order to set up an organization,
not merely bureaucratic, but make it something
which gives consistent answers to the
requirements emerging from the territory.
13CONCLUSIVE REMARKS
4. There is still much work left to do to
increase the co-operation among libraries, also
with those nearby.
Thanks to the activation of a participation
network on a territorial scale, the library has
been able to create services for different kind
of users such as young people, immigrants and
disadvantaged people. Moreover, it has organized
a place where they can interact.
