Run on sentences
  • Run-ons are not acceptable.
  • They occur when you do not stop your sentence
    with one thought. You may have too many subjects
    and/or predicates.
  • Ex. John and Mike played hockey last night, they
    cant wait to watch the Devils game.
  • Mrs. Danahy and Mrs. Calise like to play golf but
  • Mrs. Calise is better than Mrs. Danahy they cant
    wait to play this summer.
  • How can we fix these?

Fragments
  • Fragments are not a complete sentence.
  • This is when you are missing either the subject
    or the predicate.
  • EX.
  • Every day, no matter what the weather.
  • Plays well every day.

  • Commas in a series
  • ex. I will bring my sweater, jeans, bathing suit
    and shorts on vacation.
  • Commas in Dates and addresses
  • ex. On June 15, 2001, I moved to Pearl River,
    NY.
  • Appositives
  • ex. Mrs. Danahy, our language arts teacher,
    helped us study for the final exam.
