What is grants.gov?

• A single online portal for all federal grants
  funding used by 26 agencies
• MUST register on eRA Commons prior to submission
  PIs do not need to register at grants.gov, only
  the institution
• By May 2007, all grants will require
  e-submissioon
• New standard form to use SF424 Research
  Related application PHS398 expires Sept. 2007

What is eRA Commons?

• This is the NIH Research Administration site
• All PIs must register at http//era.nih.gov/Electr
  onicReceipt/preparing.htm through Sponsored
  Programs by email to sponsoredprograms_at_ttuhsc.edu
  in order for the PI to be affiliated with TTUHSC
  institution. Only reviewers may register
  themselves in eRA Commons with their own DUNS
  number.
• eRA system will assemble grant and generate the
  TOC, add the PI name and page numbers to all
  pages
• Submission will require SF424 and some PHS398
  forms to NIH

Submission to OSP Required

• OSP MUST be contacted prior to application
  (otherwise a bogus submission message will be
  generated, but the submission wont happen)
• Need to turn in to OSP 5 working days prior to
  deadline date OSP route sheet, budget with names
  effort/calendar months, salary, and how
  application will be sent (depends on size of the
  electronic file)
• Final grant appl turned in no later than 2 days
  prior to deadline in order to assure submission

How to Apply for Grants

• ID grant opportunity in NIH Guide on grants.gov
• Download the grants application package
• Complete the application save a copy on your
  computer
• The AOR submits the application to grants.gov
  directly

• Grants.gov performs form validation on submitted
  appl
• Can track status of submitted appl at grants.gov
  until NIH receives it (notified)
• eRA software performs NIH business rule on
  submitted appl
• NIH notifies PI and SO by email to check eRA
  Commons for results of NIH validations check

• PI and SO respond to the rules check
• Passed verify to eRA Commons to complete
  submission process
• Failed all errors must be corrected and entire
  corrected appl submitted to grants.gov This must
  be done through OSP.
• It is best if PI clicks Check Package for
  Errors button and corrects errors shown before
  sending to OSP.
• DO NOT CLICK THE SUBMIT BUTTON, AS IT WILL NOT
  ACTUALLY GO UNLESS THE AR IN OSP SUBMITS IT.
• After verification, eRA Commons saves the data
  and grant image, and NIH begins processing the
  appl
• Applicants can track progress of appl in eRA
  Commons

Common Errors on eRA Commons

• eRA Commons profile of PI does not match the appl
  biosketch
• Must submit changes as a REVISION, do not wait
  until the last minute as this must be done by OSP
• Failure to use the proper forms
• Submit 2 budgets modular to eRA and detailed to
  OSP
