Title: Storage Area Network SAN Connect
1WilTel Communications Nationwide Fiber-optic
Network Scott Beaudoin Chief Network Architect
2_ WilTel Network Overview
- WilTel Optical Network Architectural Overview
- Minimum of 96 fibers in every build, with
multiple conduits at 42 depth, and optical
amplifiers or regeneration stations approximately
every 40 miles - LH and ULH DWDM infrastructure can transmit up to
1.2 Tbps per fiber, using SONET OC-192 (10 Gbps)
wavelengths - DWDM capacity is terminated into optical core
switches forming an optical mesh which is
augmented and expanded using regional SONET rings - Architecture enables provisioning timeframes as
little as 25 days for OC-48 (2.5 Gbps)
connections - 30,000 miles of fiber, reaching 103 U.S. cities
metro fiber in 65 U.S. cities and 40 MSAs - Direct access to 540 lit buildings, with almost
500 more in locations where WilTel has bulk
facilities - Relationships with more than 40 competitive
access providers that add 13,500 off-net access
points - Network Operations
- Primary Network Control Center in Tulsa, Okla.
- Backup NCC in St. Louis

8_ Interoperability Considerations Roadmap
- Control Plane
- While provider-provider and provider-customer
GMPLS/UNI interoperability is possible,
back-office control mechanisms are lagging - IT control and tracking mechanisms are imperative
to successful implementations - Digital Wrapper
- G.709 implementations will vary (different FEC
codes, overhead byte usage, etc.) - Interoperability at the OTU layer (minus FEC) is
the first step - Data Framing
- PL Ethernet transport across various provider and
customer networks may require framing/encapsulatio
n interoperability - Will provide flexible PL to Ethernet handoff and
transport options - GFP and VCAT are the most prevalent but must
guarantee like-implementations between providers
9_ WilTel Optical Roadmap Summary
- Consolidate functions and integrate
platforms/components where possible to drive down
cost - Metro Packet/TDM Integration
- Layer 1/Layer 2 Core Switching Consolidation
- Drive component level integration (Si, InPh)
- Continue to drive efficiency and scalability in
the core of the network - Customize bandwidth usage for data centric
customers - GFP/VACT/LCAS implementations
- Continue to enable customer control of their
bandwidth - Supply higher rate and more data-centric services
to high bandwidth customers - 10GE WAN and LAN PHY Transport
- 40G Transport
- Digital Wrapper services
- Automate the customer-provider request process
- Streamline the turn up process through control
plane implementations - Ultimately open up a portion of the control plane
to facilitate dynamic customer control of
connection, change, disconnect requests
