Title: Why Invent Why Innovate
1Why Invent? Why Innovate?
?
?
2The key to success is to risk thinking
unconventional thoughts. Convention is the
enemy of progress. As long as youve got
slightly more perception than a wrapped loaf, you
could invent something.

21Hedy Lamarr
She patented a frequency switching system for
torpedo guidance that was two decades ahead of
its time
Today, Hedys invention enables wireless computer
modems to be mobile and virtually un-locatable
and cell phone calls to be more secure from
eavesdroppers
In 1997 she was honoured with an award at the
Computers, Freedom and Privacy Conference for
blazing new trails on the electronic frontier

24MY PROTOTYPE
Clockwork Radio GB 2262324 filed November 1991
25I went to every company I could think ofwith my
patent and my prototype radio. The ones I
remember most are
- Phillips of Eindhoven(They now make their own
wind-up radio !) - Marconi
- The Design Council
- The DTI ! (I wasnt SMART enough to get a SMART
award!)
They all turned me down !!
26It is very unlikely that UK industry could
enterprofitably into a licensing agreement with
this product. The major customers are third
world countries which, with severe debts, would
not be in the position to pay for this device.
The extent to which component parts could be
manufactured in the UK was also felt to be
limited.

Roseleigh Avenue, Manchester. Mr T
Baylis 4 February 1992 Twickenham Dear Mr
Baylis, Spring Engines Further to our telephone
conversation at Bob Symes Schutzmanns home, I
have discussed the matter with Mr George Eyres of
Levenshulme, a Master Clockmaker having much
experience of spring engine design and
development. We lack specific details of the
workload upon an engine, viz. shaft speed of
dynamo and power output required, but if we
assumed a few tens of milliwatts at say 200 rpm
then a spring engine weighing around 40 lbs,
might give an endurance of 5-10 minutes at the
most. If the shaft speed is to be a decade or so
above, then he feels that a spring engine could
be devised but would weigh around 1 Cwt and again
have an endurance no more than 10 minutes or so
at the very best. In any case the costs of
developing and producing such an engine would be
very high. Cont/...
28Mr T Baylis/ cont -2- We point out that when
a coil spring has been closed up and then allowed
to open again slowly, there is a peak level of
torque for a time after which it declines
logarithmically. The amount of gear drive
required in the application in mind would result
in a considerable loss of efficiency - increasing
as the precision of the gearing is reduced to
save money. Neither of us considers a spring
engine to be a practicable means for your
purposes because in normal duties it has a short
running time. When applied to a clock it is of
course heavily governed down to impart endurance
but its power output is then very low. Mr Eyres
wonders if you have considered biological
electro-chemical means as of local plant life of
Clive Sinclairs lemon powered transistor
radio. But best of all he feels that the energy
used in winding up a spring engine or in turning
a dynamo by hand etc, might today be more
efficiently and compactly converted direct from
the body heat of the radio user. Something on
the lines of a Thermocouple held under an armpit
or between thighs at the groin areas offering
maximum body temperatures. Yours
sincerely, Robert Ormiston-Chant Unfortunately,
