2What We Do
- The Secretary of Natural Resources is appointed
by the governor as a cabinet member to uphold the
provisions of Article 11 of the Virginia
Constitution. The secretary is charged with
overseeing the Commonwealth's natural and
historic resources. Seven agencies within the
Secretariat are committed to carrying out this
mandate.

- Department of Conservation and Recreation
(includes Chippokes Plantation Farm Foundation) - Mission To conserve, protect, enhance, and
advocate the wise use of the Commonwealth's
unique natural, historic, recreational, scenic
and cultural resources. - Department of Environmental Quality
- Mission The Department of Environmental Quality
is dedicated to protecting Virginia's environment
and promoting the health and well-being of the
citizens of the Commonwealth. We accomplish this
by planning and implementing environmental
programs, and by resolving issues efficiently,
openly, fairly and consistently. - Department of Game and Inland Fisheries
- Mission To manage Virginia's wildlife and inland
fish to maintain optimum populations of all
species to serve the needs of the Commonwealth
to provide opportunity for all to enjoy wildlife,
inland fish, boating and related outdoor
recreation to promote safety for persons and
property in connection with boating, hunting and
fishing. - Department of Historic Resources
- Mission DHR's mission is to foster, encourage,
and support the identification, stewardship, and
use of Virginia's significant historic,
architectural, archaeological and cultural
resources. - Marine Resources Commission
- Mission Headquartered in "Tidewater Virginia"
for over a century, the Marine Resources
Commission continues its responsibilities for
balancing the needs of a growing population for
development, commerce, and recreation, with the
goals of resource conservation and protection in
the marine environment. - Museum of Natural History
- Mission To interpret Virginia's natural heritage
within a global context in ways that are relevant
to all citizens of the Commonwealth. - Chippokes Plantation Farm Foundation
- Virginia Council on Indians
- Mission To serve as the advisory board to the
Governor on Indian Affairs in the Commonwealth,
and to assist others in promoting causes that
help the Indian communities reach their full
potential.

- Top Critical Business Issues faced by
- the Natural Resources Agencies as a whole.
- Uphold the provisions of Article XI of the
Virginia Constitution - it shall be the Commonwealth's policy to protect
its atmosphere, lands, and - waters from pollution, impairment, or
destruction, for the benefit, enjoyment, - and general welfare of the people of the
Commonwealth. - Removal of the Commonwealths waters generally,
and the Chesapeake Bay specifically, from the
Environmental Protection Agencys list of
impaired waters - Provide for opportunities for, and enhance the
value of, outdoor recreation in Virginia.
