How Much For That Dirt?
  • Wayne Bryan
  • Marcie Powe

2
Objective
  • --To analyze the major types of soils in
different regions of the Texas Panhandle and to
compare them with respect to cost of the land and
    how rainfall affects that price.

3
F Y I
  • Main types of soil
  • Mollisol Soils that have dark surface horizon.
These soils formed from nutrient-rich parent
materials, and are commonly in grasslands. They
are dominantly in the Great Plains and Western
    States.
  • Alfisol Soils in semiarid to humid areas that
have a clay and nutrient-enriched subsoil. They
commonly have a mixed vegetative cover and are
    productive for most crops.
  • Vertisol Clayey soils that shrink and develop
cracks when they dry and swell when they become
moist. The shrinking and swelling can damage
buildings and roads. They are dominantly in the
    Central and Western States.

4
F Y I
  • Average rainfall increases from west to east
across the panhandle ranging from 17 in/yr in the
west to 22 in/yr in the east.
  • On Average, the return is 3 times greater on
    irrigated vs. non-irrigated cropland.

Conclusion
  • Major soil orders
  • Rainfall varies only by 5 inches per year across
    the panhandle
  • Water availability plays a great factor
  • Contour of the land
  • Rural vs. City

15
Conclusion
  • The major soils differ slightly from one region
to the next, however, the price differs greatly
with respect to the contour of the land and how
much rainfall is received in that region.
