PORTFOLIO-
- Expanding the Role of Glass in Architecture
2Company History
- Architectural Glass Art was founded in 1875 as a
stained glass studio, it is one of the oldest
American studios in continuous operation. - Ken vonRoenn purchased company in 1991 and
reorganized the studio to focus on more diverse
applications in glass, thereby expanding the role
of glass in architecture.
3Objective
- Architectural Glass Arts primary objective is to
expand the role of glass in architecture and make
it more interesting, exciting, and ultimately
more meaningful for those who live, work and
experience it. - This is accomplished by expanding the diversity
of applications and the use of new technologies.
4Ecclesiastical Projects
- At Architectural Glass Art, we are primarily
concerned with the relationship between the work
and the buildings of which they are a part and
the community they represent. We approach each
project individually and develop designs that are
responsive to the particular character and the
specific needs of the church and its members. - For each project, Architectural Glass Art tires
to express the uniqueness of each parish or
congregation in the designs they create. It is
for this reason that they are recognized for
their broad diversity of approaches amongst all
their projects. It is their objective to create
work that reflects the character of the
community.

67The Process
- Each project begins with a visit to the
church/synagogue to meet the congregation and to
discuss the specific desires of the community
with the committee responsible for the artistic
glass. At this stage a preliminary budget is
determined to which the designs will be created.
The design process doesnt begin until this
meeting because the input received during this
visit is vital to the development of the design. - The first stage of the design is the construction
of an architectural model into which
transparencies of the windows will be fit. The
model is a very effective method of seeing the
relationship of the windows to the space where
they are intended. In this way the committee can
more accurately comment on the design of the
work. Accompanying the model and designs are full
scale prototypes to demonstrate the techniques
used in the design. All of these items are also
very useful for fund raising. The designs are
refined over several meetings from the comments
made by the committee. At the appropriate time
determined by the committee the designs, model
and prototypes are presented to the whole
community.
