  • Some Things You Should Know

Before you start
  • Decide which career you are researching.
  • Brainstorm a list of all of the names for that
    career
  • Example doctorphysician cosmetologistbeautici
    an
  • Identify which general area your career is in
  • Examples Medicine, Animals, Education, etc.
  • Sometimes careers are categorized in more than
    one area

  • Write questions about that career your research
    goal is to seek answers to those questions. (Know
    what you want to know).
  • Examples
  • What kind of training is required for this job?
  • How much money will I make?
  • What is the outlook for this job?
  • What will I do everyday at this job?
  • What are the benefits and disadvantages of this
    job?

As You Go
  • Generalizing (Information easier to find)
  • Determine which broad category your career is in
  • Examples law enforcement, education, medicine
  • Much information is the same for a variety of
    jobs in the same general field of categories
  • Specializing (Information becomes harder to find)
  • Concentrate on the general job area first, then
    focus on specifics if possible
  • Examples specific types of doctors or teachers

Collecting the Information
  • Career books are reference onlycant be checked
    out
  • Take notes in the format required by your teacher
  • Note-taking builds brain strength! (Photocopying
    doesnt)
  • Collect information that answers the questions
    you asked about the job
  • Collect additional information that you find
    interesting or useful.

  • Internet sites (later in the week)
  • Career center (Ms. Fiker)
  • Actual, real-live people who do the job
  • Write interview questions
  • Contact the person and ask to make an appointment
    to interview them in person or on the phone
  • Interview them using the questions you wrote
  • Non-reference books about the job
  • memoirs and stories (ask Ms. Belben for list)
