Title: Goal of Todays Class

1
Goal of Todays Class
  • Work on Components of a Lesson Plan for Middle
    School Students
  • Engagement
  • Factors related to the Instructional Procedures

2
Overview of Lesson Activity
  • Given a fixed perimeter for a rectangular region,
what dimensions would maximize the enclosed area
    minimize the enclosed area?

3
Focus Standards
  • 5M-E6 Describe how a change in the linear
dimension of an object affects its perimeter,
    area, and volume.
  • 3M-P1 PO3 Describe a real world situation that is
    depicted by a given graph.
  • Teachers plan and design effective learning
    environments and experiences supported by
    technology.

4
PerimeterArea Review
  • Perimeter and area on a Geoboard
  • How are perimeter and area related.
  • Virtual Geoboard

5
The Problem
  • Helen is going to fence off a rectangular garden
in her back yard. She has 40 feet of fence in 1
    foot segments.
  • What different sizes of gardens are possible?
Which size would enclose the largest area? The
    smallest area?

6
Task 1
  • Create a Word.doc of an engagement section for a
lesson plan built around the task of solving this
    problem
  • Save that doc to the
  • CLCC 211 Class Zambo
  • Remember to have your name in the file name.

7
Task 1 continued Engagement
  • Purpose
  • To capture students interest and motivate them
    to learn
  • To set the context for the math that is to follow
  • Contains (for our purposes)
  • Dialogue (in italics)
  • Stage Directions

8
Sharing Engagement Ideas
9
Task 2
  • Create a spreadsheet that enables you to
  • Enter a set perimeter for a rectangular region
  • Enter a variety of widths
  • And then
  • Calculates the length
  • Calculates the area
  • Graphs the results

10
Question
  • Do you think the typical middle school student
would be able to produce this type of spreadsheet
    on their own?
  • Given it is unlikely that most would be able to,
how could you enable them to do the analysis
    using a spreadsheet?

11
Answer
  • Provide them with a template.
  • A spreadsheet created by you that they only need
    to enter data into.
  • A TEMPLATE
  • Go to MyASU-EED 380-Lesson Plan

12
How to Use the Template
  • Adjust (if necessary) the perimeter by changing
the value in the top row.
  • Enter a series of numbers for the width starting
with zero and ending when the length equals zero.
  • Adjust the length of the spreadsheet by dragging
    down or clearing excess rows.
  • Click on Chart 1 to see a graph of the results.

13
Task 3
  • Use the spreadsheet to solve the problem.
  • Helen is going to fence off a rectangular garden
in her back yard. She has 40 feet of fence in 1
    foot segments.
  • What different sizes of gardens are possible?
Which shape would enclose the largest area? The
    smallest area?

14
Solutions
15
Task 4
  • Go to the discussion board for this course in
    myASU (yourASU)
  • Respond to the question about the graph of the
    data.
  • After you have read several responses, choose two
you think are good questions and add them to your
    file in the folder
  • CLCC211 Class Zambo

16
Graph Questions
17
For Next Week
  • For next week, I would like you to complete a
lesson plan for the activity we have been
    discussing today.
  • Use the standards and the problem from the
    Powerpoint.
  • Use the engagement that you have already written
  • Incorporate your questions about the graph into
    the procedures section.
