Title: Accelerated Reader

1
Accelerated Reader
  • Teachers guide

2
Why should we use AR?
  • Research based/tested
  • Aligns with State standards
  • Personalizes reading practice to each students
    current level
  • Makes essential reading practice more effective
    for every student
  • Assesses students reading with four types of
    quizzes Reading Practice, Vocabulary Practice,
    Literacy Skills, and Textbook Quizzes
  • Helps you make data driven decisions that will be
    reflected in increased reading scores

3
How Accelerated Reader quiz scores relate to
reading growth
  • Research shows that students who gain the most in
reading ability are scoring 100 on over 90 of
    the quizzes theyve taken.
  • Achieving a perfect score shows a student
understands the key points of a book and it
    motivates students to read more.
  • Emphasizing scores rather than points allows all
students to meet goals regardless of reading
    ability.

4
How often should students score 100 in order to
maximize reading growth?
5
Strategies for implementing AR and achieving
higher quiz scores
  • Find the zone of proximal development (ZPD) using
    STAR data professional judgment.
  • Set quiz blocking rules to ensure students are
    testing within ZPD.
  • Check daily progress using TOPS report or student
    reading log.
  • Review Diagnostic report weekly checking for
    students with at-risk codes.
  • Set reading goals.

6
More strategies for implementing AR
  • Make sure students know their ZPD and also know
how to find a book on their level.
  • Make sure students have daily access to a large
number of books that correlate to their reading
    levels. (classroom library)
  • Make sure students have daily access to computers
    for quizzing. (classroom, library, lab)
  • Students must practice reading for a significant
amount of time each day. Set aside time at school
    and encourage reading at home.
