Getting Started with GOALS
Charlotte Quigley, Counseling Career Services
2
otherwise known as
  • If you dont know where you are going, how can
    you possibly ever get there?

3
Lets start with some motivation
  • Goals are dreams with deadlines.Diana Scharf
    Hunt
  • In life, as in football, you won't go far unless
you know where the goalposts are.Arnold H.
    Glasgow
  • You must have long term goals to keep you from
being frustrated by short term failures.Charles
    C. Noble

4
Starting out
  • Your goals are all about YOU what you want,
where you are going, how you plan to get there.
  • Start by thinking about
  • What are your dreams?
  • What are your passions?
  • What are your needs?
  • What do you want to do after graduation?

5
6 Basic Guidelines
  • 1. Make sure its something you really want and is
    it consistent with your values?
  • 2. Any one goal cannot contradict another goal
  • 3. Write your goal in positive terms instead of
negative ones Work for what you want, not what
    you want to leave behind

6
  • 4. Define your goal in detail
  • 5. Make sure your goal is high enough
  • 6. WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS!

7
Add some details
  • What skills do I need to achieve this?
  • What information and knowledge do I need?
  • What help or assistance do I need?
  • What resources do I need?
  • What can block my progress?
  • Am I making any assumptions?
  • AND FOR EACH HOW WILL I GET IT?

8
Sample 1
  • My goal is to graduate and, in the process,
gain as much experience as possible in as many
aspects of the design industry as possible.
Whether this experience is gained through school
or work, I hope to learn as much as I can so that
when it comes down to finding a job, the process
    will be much smoother.

9
Sample 2
  • I wish to be active in many aspects of the art
industry from comic books to multimedia design
and even the movie industry. Within the movie
industry, I would translate work that is done on
the drawing board or within the computer to see
it come to life as a photorealistic creation in
the form of 3D graphic art.
  • My goal is to give people a vision to see or
imagine, to entertain visually and mentally. I
will pursue other mediums such as oil painting,
pastels, and watercolor as well. The end result
to immerse myself in the art field and to
captivate all those who wish to enjoy a side of
art that they have not experienced before.

10
Sample 3, part 1
  • My educational goals and career goals are related
to each other. I have set my educational goals in
three stages, since I know that I have to earn a
living to support my three children and myself
    while pursuing my degrees.
  • First to complete my associate degree and find a
decent job that helps me move forward to my
ultimate career goal. A position like research
assistant or some safe-house manager or assistant
counselor or social worker will be beneficial
to my further educational as well as career
    development.

11
Sample 3, part 2
  • 2nd to get a B.S. in Social Science an entry
position in a social and human rights
    organization that advocates for human
rights/women rights and social justice. I will
continue my studies while working so that my
education helps me solve daily problems in my job
and my work experiences help me understand
theories in the context of real life.
  •

12
Sample 3, part 3
  • My ultimate educational goal is to get a post
graduate degree in Social Science work for the
U.N or for the U.S. government, where I can make
    positive changes nationally and internationally
in the fields of human rights and social
    justice.

13
Sample 4
  • Short-term goal Complete my Associate's Degree
in Spring 2007. Graduate with High Honors and
continue my Bachelor's Degree in Baruch College
    majoring in Business Administration or
    Accounting.
  • Long-term goal Graduate with Bachelors degree
and continue my Masters Degree in New York
University. I want to try to get the scholarship
and get active in community as a social worker.
  • Long-term career Get a decent job and work with
a big company where I can contribute expand my
talents and the company which can provide
    challenges to improve my career.

14
Sample 5
  • My long term career goal is to become a
Psychologist. I plan on specializing in Social
Psychology because I am curious about the way
people relate to each other in small groups. I
researched how professionals in this field
reached their goals. Majoring in Psychology is
just one step toward obtaining my goal. My
internship will also help me to develop my career
options and help me experience different areas of
the field as practiced in real life.

15
Sample 6, Goal 1
  • Goal 1 Feel more self-confident in interpersonal
    interactions.
  • To achieve this goal, I will
  • Work on any insecurity I may have about my
speaking voice and/or choice of words. (Build
vocabulary and practice the clear enunciation of
    words speak louder.)
  • Practice introducing myself and engaging in
    conversation.

16
Sample 6, Goal 2
  • Goal 2 Multi-task work on a number of projects
    simultaneously.
  • To achieve this goal, I will
  • Employ meditation as a technique for dealing
with the pressures associated with multi-tasking.
  • Set up a schedule of sorts that allots equal
amounts of time for each project I will be
working on and strictly adhere to the schedule.

17
Sample 6, Goal 3
  • Goal 3 Seek to become a more independent
    learner.
  • To achieve this goal, I will
  • Read at least one article from the newspaper
    everyday.
  • Use my free time researching something relevant
to my career and/or personal goals.
  • Continue my education

And one final thought

  • is having one.Geoffry F. Abert
