Title: Setting SMART Goals
1Setting SMART Goals
2SMART Goals
Specific Measurable Attainable
Relevant Time-Bound
3Think about it.
In absence of clearly defined goals, we become
strangely loyal to performing daily acts of
trivia. Unknown
4Five major functions of management
- Planning
- Organizing
- Directing
- Controlling
- Coordinating
- The planning and controlling functions of
management often receive less attention in
general- than they should. One way to more
effectively fulfill these two functions is
through effective goal setting.
5A few ground rules
Definitions Mission A statement defining the
function and purpose of an organization. Goal
Broad, abstract statement describing an ideal
intent, state, or condition. Objectives
Specific statements that describe desired
behavior in measurable terms and acceptable
criteria of performance.
- Assumptions
- People work better if they know what the goals
of the organization are. - If people have clear ideas about what they hope
to accomplish, then their chances of
accomplishment are enhanced. - Intrinsic goals produce more energy then
extrinsic goals therefore, people will work
better if they set the goals for their own jobs. - Progress is measured in terms of what one is
trying to make progress toward. - People are more comfortable in their job
situation when they know how they will be
evaluated.
- Components
- A goal is a precise statement of a desired state
of affairs that includes the following - It is realistic, attainable, feasible, yet
provides challenge and growth. - It has a target date for completion.
- It has measurable results.
- It is clear, specific, and understandable.
- It is meaningful and relevant.
- It is beneficial.
- It is flexible and has more than one method of
attainment.
6The process of goal setting is similar to solving
a problem
Why - Clarify the needs and purposes that are the
basis of your goals. What - Generate the
possibilities and narrow down the alternatives to
the ones you intend to pursue. When - Identify
when planning, work sessions and the actual event
will take place. Where - Determine locations of
events. Who - Delegate responsibilities equally
to all members. How - Decide how you will
implement the selected alternatives.
7Now get SMART!
8Get - Specific
Specific - A specific goal has a much greater
chance of being accomplished than a general goal.
This is where the the Problem Solving Analogy
can be applied
Why - Clarify the needs and purposes that are the
basis of your goals. What - Generate the
possibilities and narrow down the alternatives to
the ones you intend to pursue. When - Identify
when planning, work sessions and the actual event
will take place. Where - Determine locations of
events. Who - Delegate responsibilities equally
to all members. How - Decide how you will
implement the selected alternatives. Goals
should be clean and unambiguous vagueness and
platitudes have no place in goal setting.
Specific goals are also measurable there must
be some way to objectively measure success or
failure!
9Get ready to Measure!!
A goal is of use only if it can be measured.
Establish concrete criteria for measuring
progress toward the attainment of each goal you
set. When you measure your progress, you stay on
track, reach your target dates, and experience
the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on
to continued effort required to reach your goal.
To determine if your goal is measurable, ask
questions such as......How much? How many? How
will I know when it is accomplished?
10Attainable be realistic
Goals need to be reasonable and achievable.
Attainable goals are also ACTION-ORIENTED. It's
much easier to measure things being done. What
are the action-steps youll take in the process
of achieving your goal?
Set priorities for your goals. A major part of
successful living lies in the ability to put
first things first. Indeed, the reason most major
goals are not achieved is that we spend our time
doing second things first. Robert J. McKain
11Relevant - do the goals fit?
Goals must be an important tool in the grand
scheme of reaching your desired Mission and
Vision for the organization. Another way to
define relevant is that a a goal must represent
an objective toward which you are both willing
and able to work. A relevant goal is also
realistic. Your goal is probably realistic if you
truly believe that it can be accomplished.
Additional ways to know if your goal is realistic
is to determine if you have accomplished anything
similar in the past or ask yourself what
conditions would have to exist to accomplish this
goal.
I don't know the key to success, but the key to
failure is trying to please everybody. Bill Cosby
12Time-bound a START and a FINISH
Goals must have definate starting points and end
points. Commitment to deadlines helps build the
pressure that aids in building the motivation
necessary for success! Goals without deadlines
can be easily overtaken by the day to day crises
that invariably arise within an organization.
Time is that quality of nature which keeps events
from happening all at once. Lately it doesn't
seem to be working. Anonymous
13Goal setting tips
- Goals and objectives are a road map to successful
management - You need a map to know where you're going and
whether you have accomplished it or arrived at
your destination. - Make a list of activities and priorities needed
to accomplish your goals and then schedule your
time! - Planning is essential and must be done every day.
- Goals change with time dont let change be a
stress in your life! - Don't PROCRASTINATE!
14The importance of celebration!
Balance is an important force in nature. To
ensure balance within an organization it is
critical that success must be celebrated in a
timely and rewarding fashion. The opposite side
of this balance is correcting and re-working the
the goals that were NOT achieved. These two
forces correction/re-alignment of goals and
celebration of success must be kept alive and in
careful balance if the health of an organization
is to be preserved! Both personal and employee
motivation will increase and decrease over time
making sure that successes are ALWAYS rewarded
will help keep the excitement alive!
Ability is what you're capable of doing.
Motivation determines what you do. Attitude
determines how well you do it. Lou Holtz This one
step -- choosing a goal and sticking to it --
changes everything. Scott Reed
