Creativity - A national priority
  • We need to encourage creativity and ambition
  • (NP5 - Learning for Life)
  • We need to develop the conditions in which
creativity and innovation can flourish in all
sectors of Scottish life (SEED 2000)
  • We need to equip pupils with foundation skills,
attitudes and expectations necessary to prosper
in a changing society (SEED 2000)

3

  • Communication skills 74 (including
    skills of presentation)

  • Creativity 23

4
Creativity in young people
  • What is needed in our society is not more
'creative people' - we need more people who are
more conscious of, and confident about, their
    creativity.
  • People who are
  • aware of change, open to change
  • flexible, able to adapt to new ways
  • resilient in the face of obstacles

5
How can we recognise creativity in the classroom?
  • Not just the creative arts
  • Creativity
  • across a young person's programme of learning
  • underpinning and enriching the way they are
taught and the way they learn
  • Creativity working in tandem with critical
    thinking

6
Where to now?.
  • There is no single definition of creativity,
    but...
  • Do you recognise it when you see it? - Most
    people do!
  • The best way to define creativity is to invent it
    yourself
  • All of us in education need to play our part in
    establishing and nurturing it

7
What can we do in our schools to encourage
creativity?
  • Audit our programmes
  • Initiate debate about learning
  • Plan for progressive development but don't be too
analytical or dwell too much on detail
  • Plan for contexts, opportunities and activities
  • Share and celebrate

8
What can we be in our classrooms to encourage
creativity?
  • Be models of creative behaviour
  • Encouraging and supportive of young people
  • Valuing different ways of thinking / doing
  • Interacting with pupils
  • Creating authentic contexts full of potential and
    energy
  • Seeking to empower young people and make them
    responsible
  • Holding them accountable

9
The way ahead
  • The principal goal of education is to create
people who are capable of doing new things, not
simply repeating what other generations have
    done...
  • ...people who are creative, inventive
    discoverers.
