Nature of change in the health Library and
Information sector
  • Thirty years ago most people thought that change
would mean more of the same, only better. That
was incremental change and to be welcomed. Today
we know that in many areas of life we cannot
guarantee more of the same we cannot even
predict with confidence what will be happening in
    our own lives
  • Charles Handy (1991)

4
Innovation and change
  • Renewal and enlargement of the range of products
and services and the associated markets
  • Establishment of new methods of production,
    supply and distribution
  • Introduction of changes in management, work
organization and the working conditions and
    skills of the workforce
  • European Commission (1996)

5
Links between creativity and innovation
  • Creativity is the process of human thought that
can lead to new ideas (Burke, 1994)
  • Three stages for creativity Stage 1 identify
idea, Stage 2 develop the idea, Stage 3
transfer the development into a service
  • Establishing the environment to allow creativity
    to flourish

6
Managing innovation
  • Role of the leader in innovative practice
  • Team skills mix and innovation
  • Organisational structure and innovation
  • Awareness of outside world and innovation

7
Resistance to innovation and change
  • Resistance at the individual level
  • Resistance at the group level
  • Resistance at the organisational level

8
Overcoming resistance to innovation and change
  • Education and persuasion
  • Participation and involvement
  • Facilitation and support
  • Negotiation and agreement
  • Manipulation and co-option
  • Direction and reliance on explicit and implicit
    coercion

9
Summary
  • Innovation is not reformation
  • Innovation is about introducing useful change
