What is African Sanctus?
10
African Sanctus, composed by David Fanshawe in
1972, is a celebratory and visionary work,
expressing unity between people, their faiths and
above all, their music. It is an unorthodox
setting of the Latin mass in which the
traditional text is integrated with traditional
African music recorded by the composer on his
legendary journey through Africa A sort of Mass
meets Maasai!
The taped music from Africa is heard in
counterpoint with a live chorus, large childrens
choir, operatic soprano soloist, instrumental
ensemble and ethnic drummers. Very different
cultures are imaginatively and ingeniously fused
together into an electrifying, exhilarating and
uplifting piece.
African Sanctus is more than just music. It is
an event, a celebration of power and energy, both
visual, aural and multi-cultural. With images
from Africa on a large screen accompanying the
music, and dancers moving to the African rhythms,
this is a truly multimedia performance.

Benefits to the University of Sheffield and the
local community
As representatives of Sheffield University and
The Union, student volunteers involved in
African Sanctus will undertake a significant
outreach project, involving a local school, the
city-wide community and the world of professional
music.
Benefits will include the forging of strong links
between The University and a local community
school an opportunity for the local residents to
witness The University and its students
interacting in a positive way with the local
community.
It will also provide an opportunity for the
University to be seen to be actively promoting
integration between its students and the city
which supports them, all of which will help to
alleviate tensions between Sheffields Town and
Gown.
12
Benefits to students of the University of
Sheffield
The singing workshops will offer a valuable
opportunity for students who do not study music
but would like to use their musical training in a
teaching environment to develop their CVs by
giving them an outlet for their musical, teaching
and communication skills.
This will be a valuable opportunity for students
from all departments of the University to use
skills they have gained through extra-curricular
activities, working in new areas and widening
their career aspirations.
During the workshops and performance, the student
volunteers and all members of The Singers
Society will work closely with internationally
renowned musicians. This rare opportunity will
give the students a real taste of what is
possible with vision!
13
SUMMARY OF COSTS To provide singing workshops
To provide drumming workshops
To provide dance workshops
To provide art workshops
14
To stage final multimedia performance of African
Sanctus involving all 100 children from
workshops

15
To take this project further beyond our current
plans, we would like to be able to consider
providing the school childrens parents with free
tickets. David Fanshawe, as one of the worlds
foremost ethnomusicologists, would also be an
excellent speaker, both for speaking to children
involved in the project and for speaking to
students at the university. To enable these
additional aspects to the project we would need
extra funding in the region of 1000.
16
Remember, these costs are all in addition to The
Singers Societys day to day running costs,
outlined earlier, which are covered by the
membership fees and autumn concert takings.
17
Therefore we need to raise 9705Where is the
extra money coming from?

The Small GroupsSocii Cantorum and Ladies Choir
Outgoing costs for the Small Groups is kept low,
just the fee for Music Hire. Socii Cantorum is
putting on two concerts this semester, one of
Purcells Dido and Aeneas and one of Vivaldis
Gloria. We expect at least 400 in ticket sales
from these two events, which will go towards the
May concert. This also applies for any other
corporate events/ singing at balls that the Small
Groups are involved in.
20
Grand Total of extra income from fundraising
efforts
7750
So, only 1955 left to raise!
21
  • The fundraising concert has promoted interest
from corporate sponsors, and we are actively
    pursuing other sponsorship opportunities.

This will allow us to put on an amazing event,
and any extra money we raise can only make it
better!
