Title: 2003 Roadside Vegetation Management Seminar

1
2003 Roadside Vegetation Management Seminar
  • When is it an Aquatic Application?

2
The Letter
  • Waters of this Commonwealth
  • Rivers, streams, creeks, rivulets, impoundments,
    ditches, watercourses, storm sewers, lakes,
dammed water, wetlands, ponds, springs and other
bodies or channels of conveyance of surface and
underground water, or parts thereof, whether
natural or artificial, within or on the
    boundaries of this Commonwealth.
  • 25 PA Code 102.1

3
The Spirit
  • When water bodies are very small (puddle) and
isolated, a permit may not be required
  • Is the water body an ecosystem?
  • Is it continuous with an ecosystem?

4
Guidelines for Wetland Settings
  • EPA registered aquatic herbicides should be used
around water, using 35 ft as a recommended buffer
  • Exceptions to the buffer recommendation would be
precisely applied treatments, such as cut surface
    treatments.
  • Low volume foliar

5
Permit Required
  • Open water
  • Bank treatment where overspray may contact water
  • Treatment of wetlands with standing water beyond
    isolated puddles
  • Treatment of wetlands with saturated soils

6
Permit Not Required
  • If water WILL NOT be treated and soil IS NOT
    saturated
  • Wetlands with only isolated puddles and without
    saturated soil
  • Rip-rap treatment if no overspray will occur
  • Riparian areas, back from stream, if no overspray
    will occur

PENNDOT Treatment Scenarios
  • Broadcast applications to/over ditches - if not
dry, permit required or treatment delayed.
  • Wetlands becoming infested with purple
    loosestrife and potentially other species

12
Wetland Scenarios
  • Seasonally dry
  • Intermittent flooding/saturation
  • Inundated/saturated

13
Aquatic Herbicides
  • endothall
  • 2,4-D
  • fluridone
  • diquat
  • glyphosate
  • triclopyr

14
Selectivity
  • Glyphosate
  • Non-selective
  • Active on loosestrife, phragmites and non-target
    species
  • Triclopyr
  • Selective
  • Will leave grasses, sedges, rushes

15
Glyphosate-aquatic
  • IPA salt
  • GlyPro (Rodeo)
  • surfactant free
  • 4 lb ae/gal (5.4 lb ai/gal)
  • Glyphomate 41
  • surfactant-loaded
  • 3 lb ae/gal (4 lb ai/gal)

16
Triclopyr-aquatic
  • Garlon 3A
  • Aquatic uses in production forests or industrial
    non-crop sites only
  • Includes ROW
  • Renovate
  • Identical formulation to Garlon 3A
  • Labeled for other non-crop sites

17
Triclopyr in PENNDOT Wetlands
  • Is the wetland a ROW?

18
Research
  • Compare triclopyr and glyphosate for control of
    loosestrife
  • Rate
  • Spot vs. Broadcast
  • Timing
