Athelstane Allotment Project
  • By Year 10 Year 11

2
In the beginning
3
  • When we first got our allotment it was a real
mess. There was rubbish all over the place and
it took quite a while just to clear the site and
    make the area safe.

  • We worked together as a team to get the site
ready for planting crops. We spent quite a lot
of time in the class deciding what to grow and
which members of the group would be responsible
    for which jobs.

6
Health Safety
  • Each week we did a check of the allotment to
make sure that it was safe to work in. At first
we found lots of nails and glass so we wore
    gloves.

Getting ready to grow
  • We then had to prepare the ground ready for
planting. We had to do a lot of digging and also
visited B Q to buy tools and equipment such as
    forks, spades, compost and seeds.

Planting and Growing
10
We used a lot of compost and manure but at last
we were ready to plant some crops.

Before long the plants were growing.
12
Every week we went to the allotment to check on
the plants. We did the weeding, watering and
planting throughout the year. Other classes also
go to the allotment to help out with the watering
and planting.

Trax FM came to see what we were doing at the
allotment. They interviewed some of us and Tony
was on the news talking about our work.

The future
  • We have just been given our second allotment.
It is next to our old one and we will start to
clear it in the Autumn. It is in a real mess at
the moment but we hope that it will be as
    successful as our first one.
