Introduction
  • Over the past few years, everyone in the world
has started to worry about global warming and its
    effects.
  • One of the main contributors to global warming is
    transport.
  • There are many different methods of energy saving
transport, but there are far too many to list.
  • Today I am going to focus on transport to
    work/school.

3
Fuels
  • Transport can harm the environment in many ways,
one of the main contributors is the fuel they
    use.
  • Some fuels can be very harmful as they produce
lots of dangerous fumes and gasses.
  • There is now a new range of fuels that are very
energy efficient, and dont harm the environment
as much. However, they can cost a lot of money to
    make and to use.

Cars
  • On your way to work/school

5
Lift Sharing
  • Lift sharing is a great way to save energy, as
science has proved that two people in two
separate cars is less energy efficient than lots
    of people in one car.
  • So, find out who lives in your area and start
lift sharing, you can make new friends and save
    energy!

6
Travel plan
  • Travel plans use the science of map reading to
make journeys quicker and more energy efficient.
  • To make a travel plan, you need look up a journey
on a map and work out which route is quicker and
avoids major traffic jams on busy roads, this
will mean that you would use less fuel and save
    energy.

7
Alternative Fuel Cars
  • Scientific research has produced the following
    alternative fuel cars
  • Electric Cars Pollution free, energy efficient,
short range and lower speed, ideal for travel in
cities where there are many recharging stations.
  • Biofuel Cars These have been adapted to use
fuel created from crops, unlike fossil fuels this
is a renewable fuel source and environmentally
    friendly.
  • Hybrid Cars Use the combination of a standard
petrol engine with electric motors. Electric
drive is used low speed and is ideal for city
driving. At higher speeds the petrol engine is
used not only for motion but also to recharge the
    batteries.

8
Trains
  • On your way to work/school

9
Electric Trains
  • Trains that are powered by electricity pollute
the environment less and are energy efficient.
They are also known for being very comfortable
    and smooth.
  • However, they use a lot of electricity that has
to be generated using fossil fuels. These, along
with energy, are something that also need to be
    saved.

10
Solar Powered Trains
  • Solar powered trains are a very good idea because
they use the Sun as fuel instead of fossil fuels.
  • The trains dont produce any fumes or gases, but
if it is a cloudy day (which is very common in
England) it would be very slow, or might not work
    at all.

11
The Maglev Train
  • The Maglev train uses the science of magnets to
    move.
  • If you put two magnets together with opposite
poles facing, they attract. Then, if you turn one
of the magnets around, so that the same poles are
facing, the other magnet will be repelled and
    create motion.
  • This is basically how the Maglev train moves.
This is a very clever idea as it is very energy
efficient, but the downside is that the trains
cost a lot of money to make and run.

12
Buses
  • On your way to work/school

13
Hydrogen bus
  • Buses that run on hydrogen are a very energy
efficient alternative to those that run on diesel
    fuels.
  • These buses produce only water as waste and dont
    produce any gases or fumes.
  • However, they are very expensive and the fuel
cell used to produce the hydrogen takes a long
    time to make.

14
The Double Decker bus
  • The Double Decker bus is a two storey bus. This
is very energy efficient method as it is two
buses in one so it uses half the amount of fuel
    and energy.
  • These buses are starting to get replaced with the
Two-Part bus, however there are still quite a few
    around.

15
The Two-Part Bus
  • The Two-Part bus is two buses joined together in
    the middle.
  • These buses appeared in the streets of London
last year, and are starting to replace the Double
Decker. Some of the buses can also run on
hydrogen, but this is very expensive.
  • Even though this bus can hold a lot of people,
they are also wobbly, can get stuck around
corners and create traffic jams because they are
    so long.

16
Conclusion
  • There are many ways that science is helping the
environment by saving energy and making transport
    more efficient.
  • Trains are energy efficient because they can hold
a lot of people and can use lots of different
methods of saving energy. However, they can be
inconvenient because they can only take you to
the station so you might complete your journey to
work/school with a bus or taxi.
  • Buses are also an efficient means of transport.
Environmentally friendly buses can be very
expensive and increasing bus transport will add
to the traffic congestion on the roads to
    work/school.
  • Car journeys can be made more energy efficient by
lift sharing at no additional cost. Furthermore
drivers can now choose to buy some very energy
efficient cars such as electric or hybrid.
  • So, overall cars are the most energy efficient
because they can save energy at a low price.

And, of course there is also good old walking and
cycling!
