2What is a library media center?
- a place where literary, reference and other
materials are kept for use - where people can borrow these items for a
specific time period
3What kinds of materials can be found in a LMC?
- Books, magazines, newspapers, videos, equipment,
and computers for Internet and CD reference
4The CMS High School LMC is open from 745 A.M.
until 300 P.M every school day.
5How can students come to the Library Media Center?
- as a class with your teacher
- with a pass written by a classroom teacher
6Rules of the LMC
- Respect others.
- Respect the library materials and furnishings.
- Use your time wisely.
7LIBRARY PASSES
- You must have a pass signed by your teacher to
come to the library. Passes should be shown to
Mrs. Dixon when you enter the LMC. If you leave
before class ends, she will initial and put the
time on your pass.
8What things can you bring with you to the LMC?
- Books, paper and pencils, notebooks
9What can you not bring to the LMC?
10How many books may be checked out and for how
long?
2 books for 2 weeks
11LIBRARY FINES
- if books are not returned on time you will be
charged .05 per day - if you lose a book you must pay the cost of the
book
12BE RESPONSIBLE!
- It is your responsibility to know when your book
is due. - If you have a fine or an overdue book you cannot
check out another book until the book is turned
in and the fine is paid. - Let us know as soon as possible if you have lost
a book.
13What are Fiction books?
- Fiction books are story books and are written
about something that is made up. - Fiction books have FIC and the first three
letters of the authors last name on the spine
label. - For example FIC GRI
14Where are fiction books located?
- Fiction books are located in alphabetical order
in the shelves at the back of the library. - Accelerated Reader Books are in the Fiction
section. FOLLOW THE SIGNS!
15What are Biographies?
- Biographies are books that tell the story of a
persons life. - They are usually about someone that has made some
type of contribution to the world. - Biographies are found in shelves at the back of
the LMC.
16- Biographies have a 92 and the first three letters
of the last name of the person the book is about
on the spine 92 - WAS

17What are collective biographies?
- These are books that contain a small amount of
information about lots of different people (like
a book about the presidents). - They have a 920 and the first 3 letters of the
authors last name on their spine. -
18What are story collection books?
- They are books that contain several short stories
which usually have something in common. - They have SC for Story Collection and the first
three letters of the authors last name on the
spine. EX SC DOY
19Dewey Decimal Classified Books
- These are the books in which are classified by
subject according to the Dewey Decimal System. - They have Dewey number and the first three
letters of the authors last name on the spine.
EX 502.8 ADA
20What are reference books?
- Books that are especially helpful in finding
factual information. - Because they are so popular and in almost
constant use, they are not allowed to circulate
(be checked out). - They are designed to be searched for specific
information and not read straight through. - They should have a R or REF as the call number.
21What are the most popular reference books?
- Almanacs
- Dictionaries
- Encyclopedias
22Reference books cannot be checked out!!! Copies
can be made for 0.20 per page by the librarian.
23How do you know where to locate a book in the LMC?
- Use the card catalog, you can search by title,
author, or subject. - Our card catalog is found on the computer.
24Where do you find very current information?
- The Internet, World Wide Web
- Magazines and Newspapers
- EBSCO-online database
- The Sentinel Record
- AR Democrat/Gazette
25Computer Use
- You are not allowed to use the computer without a
valid reason. - No use of e-mail is permitted.
- You must have a pass from a teacher.
- You must complete an Internet research form. You
may obtain these from Mrs. Dixon. - You must sign in on the sign in sheet at the
circulation desk.
26Printing from the computers costs 0.20 per page,
and you must obtain permission before printing
anything. See the librarian!
