jointly work on an individual project without
relying on a central server

Defining P2P collaboration
  • P2P applications enable direct user-to-user
    transactions
  • P2P collaboration enables group communication,
scheduling, file sharing, and application sharing
without tying up the resources of a central
    network server.
  • All communication and transferring is done on a
peer-to-peer basis, over either internal network
    or the global Internet.

6
Key Components-
Working on a group project requires the use of
many different applications including
communications, scheduling and contact managing,
file sharing, application sharing, database
management and in some cases application
development.
P2P collaboration software must combine features
from many different P2P (and non-P2P)
applications. The ideal P2P collaboration
software would be part Napster, part AIM, and
part Outlook and be capable of being accessed
from anywhere in the world.
7
P2P Collaboration
  • Since most of these applications are
non-dependent on a central server, group members
    can work online, or offline.
  • They typically share a virtual workspace which
includes text messaging and shared documents.
  • Individuals not system administrators- create
    their own workspaces.
  • Group members decide on their own who should join
    their project and when.
  • P2P collaboration software eliminates the old
    boundaries of time and place.
  • P2P projects are automatically updated whenever
any member of the group makes a change all
members of the group see the changes in real time.
