Introductions You!
  • Most of you know little (or nothing) about IS
  • Which seems a little surprising
  • Who has never used a computer?
  • Who has never sent an email?
  • Who didnt use an ATM machine or ebanking?
  • A few of you are experts
  • Which is what I would expect
  • With many years of IT experience
  • And quite high expectations for this course.

4

Course Goals
  • Understand information systems and technologies
and their role in business ("know what").
  • Develop an appreciation for the rationale and
principles that underlie decision making related
to the application management of IS ("know
    why").
  • Develop personal skills and relevant to an
executive without direct IT responsibility ("know
    how").
  • Form a broad, high-level perspective on the
strengths and weaknesses of IS at the corporate
level and for specific strategic purposes.
  • Integrate your prior executive experience into
the themes of the course and your learning.

8
IS for Managers in 28 Hours?!
  • IS is a huge topic, as many of you know or can
    imagine.
  • My decisions about which topics to include, which
not, inevitably means that some are excluded.
  • The eight classes cover a range of topics
    relevant to senior execeutives
  • As a whole, they provide a partial perspective on
IS, but not a holistic view.
  • FB5003, as a whole, is designed to inform you, to
introduce some of the latest, as well as more
reliable, ideas and trends. It should provide a
platform for your own further reading and
    exploration.

My Suggested Learning Styles
  • I prefer to treat you as adults, not children
  • So you have a role to play, a responsibility to
    engage with your own learning
  • The more you participate, listen, criticise,
challenge so the more you will learn.
  • Each class will have
  • Opportunities for interaction, discussion,
debate, as well as your own work-life examples
  • Since this is an IS class, you can expect to
engage in some hands-on IT stuff as well.
  • But dont worry, no programming!
