  • Expatriation - international transfers - is one
    of the foundations for the implementation of
    global strategy.
  • Managing expatriation is one of the biggest
    challenges for human resource management.
  • The US and UK have the highest population of
    resident expatriates.

  • Traditional assumptions about expatriate
    characteristics
  • Expatriates were selected from the employees in
    the parent country.
  • The expatriate population was homogeneous in
    ethnicity, gender, and experience.
  • Expatriate assignments were temporary (3-4 years
    in duration).
