2iMovie Environment - Starting
When you launch iMovie for the first time, you
will receive this message. You are asked to
either open an existing project or create a new
one. After you have created projects, iMovie
automatically opens the last project you worked
on when you launch it.
3iMovie Environment
Storage Shelf keep the content of your movie
over here until you are ready to insert it into
the timeline.
Preview Monitor when you want to preview any of
your movie, this window is where it will appear.
Camera vs Edit This will automatically switch to
the camera view when you plug a camcorder into
your firewire port. To edit your movie, click on
the picture of the scissors.
Volume Control Drag to increase or decrease the
volume of your movie.
Timeline View The clips in this view will look
like strips of paper. Place your audio into your
movie in this view.
Slides View The clips in this view will look
like photo slides. Sound will not show up in this
view.
4iMovie Environment Capturing Video
- Capturing Media
- With a DV device (i.e. camcorder) connected to
the computer, click the Camera Mode button so
that it is set to importing mode. - Use the Camera Mode playback controls to preview
a tape in the iMovie monitor. - Use the Rewind, Stop, Play, Pause, and Fast
Forward buttons to find the desired footage.
(Playback Controls) - Click the Import button or the space bar to begin
capturing a sequence. - Click the Import button or the space bar again to
stop recording. - Clips will be automatically stored on the shelf
display by default. - It is possible to import directly to the clip
viewer by changing the import preferences. - Choose Edit gt Preferences and click on the
Import tab. - Select Movie to have clips imported directly to
the movie (clip viewer).
5iMovie Environment Importing Video Stills
Importing Images and QuickTime Video Files NOTE
iMovie automatically applies pan and zoom (the
Ken Burns Effect) to still images when importing.
Deselect the Ken Burns Effect checkbox in the
Photos pane before importing a still image. The
pan and zoom will not be added. 1. Choose File
gt Import File. 2. Select a file to import. 3.
Click the Open button to import the file
6iMovie Environment Editing Video
Editing Video Clips Editing of the video clip can
be done while clip is on the shelf, or in the
clip viewer. To Arrange Clips 1. To move a clip
from the shelf to the clip viewer, make sure the
shelf is showing the current clips by clicking on
the Clips button below the shelf. 2. Click and
move the clip to the desired location in the
timeline. Note You want to be in the Slides
view to rearrange your clips. 3. To select and
move multiple clips, hold down the shift key on
the keyboard when selecting clips. 4. To
rearrange a clips position, just drag it before
or after another clip. To move a clip
more precisely hold down the control key while
dragging it, or hold down the control key
while pressing an arrow key to move a clip in
small increments. Note It is not possible to
place a clip before or after an existing
transition.
7iMovie Environment Editing Video
To Crop Clips (hint crop means keep) It is
possible to adjust footage to any desired length
using the crop markers. Cropping saves the
selected part of a clip and removes the frames
before and after the crop markers. Select the
clip in the clips, clip viewer or timeline
viewer. 1. Click to select the clip 2. Click and
drag just below the scrubber bar to make the crop
markers appear. 3. Drag the crop markers to the
desired length with one marker at beginning and
one at the end. The final clip is the yellow
portion inside the crop markers. Note For
more accuracy, click either marker and use the
arrow keys to move the marker frame by frame. 4.
Choose Edit gt Crop to delete the frames outside
of the crop markers. Note The crop markers can
also be used to remove a section from the middle,
beginning or end of a clip. Select the section to
remove and then choose Edit gt Clear (or press the
Delete key) to remove selected frames from the
clip. Splitting Clips It is possible to split a
clip into two separate clips. Select the clip in
the clips, clip viewer or timeline viewer. 1.
Click to select the clip 2. Drag the playhead in
the scrubber bar to find the frame where you want
to split the clip. 3. Choose Edit gt Split Clip at
Playhead. A new clip immediately appears. Note
To undo an action Choose Edit gt Undo.
8iMovie Environment Video Effects
Adding Video Effects 1. Click the Effects
button. 2. Select the video you will be applying
the effect to. 3. Select a video effect in the
Effects pane. 4. Adjust the effect using the
sliders that appear in the Effects pane. Not
every effect has sliders. 5. Click Apply to add
effect. Changing a Clips Speed/Direction It is
possible to change the direction of one or more
video clips. 1. Select the clip or clips in the
clip viewer or timeline viewer 2. Choose Advanced
gtReverse Clip Direction. It is possible to make
one or more video clips play slower or faster. 1.
Select the clip or clips in the timeline
viewer. 2. Drag the clip speed slider arrow to a
faster or slower setting. Note Moving the speed
slider to the left makes the clip go twice as
fast for each mark, so it takes up half as much
time in your movie. Moving it to the right makes
the clip go half as fast for each mark, taking
twice as much time in your movie.
9iMovie Environment Renaming Clips
Storage Shelf keep the content of your movie
over here until you are ready to insert it into
the timeline.
- Renaming Clips
- Clips are saved by a generic name. However you
can rename clips inside of iMovie application,
but do not rename clips inside of the iMovie
project media folder. - To rename your clips while in clip viewer or
shelf area, click the clip name and type the new
name. - 2. To rename your clips while in the timeline
viewer, double click the clip and rename it in
the Clip Info Window
10iMovie Environment - Photos
Here is how to give your photo the pan and zoom
effect in iMovie 1. In iMovie, click on the
photos tab 2. Select a photo you want to pan
and zoom from your iPhoto viewer and drag the
photo into your timeline where you want it to
appear in your movie. 3. Click the Start radio
button and in the small preview window, position
where you want the pan and zoom to start in your
photo. Use the Zoom slider to either zoom in or
out in your starting position.4. Now click the
Finish radio button and reposition and zoom
in/out to your final ending place. 5. Click the
Preview button to test your effect. 6. Use the
Duration slider to slow down or speed up your
effect.7. When you are satisfied with the
effect, click Apply and iMovie will render your
effect for your iMovie!
11iMovie Environment - Audio
- Track 1 holds the video which can contain audio
as well. If you do not want audio that is
attached to video to be heard, you can just
deselect the check-box to the right. - If you want to remove the audio from individual
video clips - Select the video clip
- Go to the Advanced menu and choose Extract Audio
- Go back to the Advanced menu and choose Unlock
Audio - Hit the Delete key
Importing Audio Files Audio can be imported in a
QuickTime compatible format. Two of the most of
these are AIFF and MP3. 1. Select where you want
to insert audio by positioning the playhead in
the timeline viewer. 2. Choose File gt Import
File. 3. Select the file and click the Import
button. The clip will appear on audio track
2. Note Not every MP3 format is supported by
QuickTime. Those that arent cannot be opened and
used in iMovie.
This is the Timeline View. This view is in
tracks. Track 1 is used for video. Track 2 3
are used for audio. To mute out a track, you can
click on the check box to the right.
12iMovie Environment - Audio
Adding audio to your movie from CD Insert your
CD in the CD-Rom drive of you computer and the
screen will appear above the Audio button. The
tracks on your CD appear in the window. There
are two ways to import the audio into your movie.
To import audio the Timeline viewer must be
active. 1. The first way to import audio is to
click on an audio track from the CD and drag it
to one of the audio tracks in the Timeline
Viewer. (Note this imports the entire CD audio
track) 2. The second way to import audio is to
click on an audio track in the Timeline Viewer
and then click on a CD audio track. Next press
the Record Music button to begin the importing
process and click the stop button to end
recording. It is possible to add audio to a track
that currently has audio on it. The added audio
track is combined with the existing audio of the
movie. After the audio is added it the Timeline
Viewer, the new audio track is purple. Note you
may need to reposition the audio track in your
movie.
13iMovie Environment Sound Effects
- Adding Sound Effects
- Sound effects are marked by a square, and cannot
be modified in their duration - Click the Audio button.
- 2. Click on the sound effect, and drag it from
the list in the Audio pane to a desired location
on audio track 1 or 2 in the timeline viewer.
- Cropping Audio Clips
- Cropping audio is the same as cropping video.
- Select an audio clip in the audio track 1 or 2 in
the timeline viewer. - 2. Drag the triangle crop markers to the desired
beginning and end of the audio clip. - 3. Choose Edit gtCrop from the menu. Note Sound
effects can not be cropped. - F. Splitting Audio Clips
- Select an audio clip.
- 2. Move the playhead to where you want to split
the clip. - 3. Choose Edit gt Split selected Audio Clip at
Playhead.
14iMovie Environment - Audio
Edit Volume This tool lets you edit the volume
at individual spots. Making Audio Fade in and
Out You can make sound fade in and out for an
individual audio or video clip. 1. Select Edit
Volume checkbox in the timeline viewer. A volume
level bar appears in each clip. 2. Click a point
on the volume level bar at the beginning or end
of the clip. 3. Move the marker that appears up
or down, depending on whether you want the sound
to be louder or softer at that point. 4. To
remove a marker, select it and then press the
delete key.
Zoom This tool lets you increase or decrease the
view of the elements in your track.
Speed This tool lets you increase or decrease
the speed of the selected clips in your track.

- Locking an Audio Clip to a Video Clip
- You may need to lock audio to a specific video
clip if you edit video after placing audio. - Select the audio clip.
- 2. Move the playhead to the point where you want
audio and video to lock. - 3. Choose Advanced gt Lock Audio Clip at Playhead.
- Note to unlock the clips, Advanced gt Unlock
Audio Clip.
16iMovie Environment A Look at Menus
The Edit menu is used to edit your video and
audio clips. You can crop or cut a selection,
split a selected clip or duplicate a selected
clip. It is also used to create a still image
from a frame in a movie clip.
TIP I'm a big fan of the "When in doubt, make a
copy" rule, and luckily, it's easy to make copies
of your clips. Just click the clip, press
Command-C to copy and then Command-V to paste. A
twin of your clip will appear next to the
original. If you make a mistake while editing the
clip, don't fret.
As long as you haven't emptied the trash can, you
can quickly restore your clip to its original
state. Just select the clip and choose Restore
Clip Media from the Advanced menu.
17iMovie Environment - Titles
Adding titles There are a variety of title
styles, fonts, and colors. A. Superimposing a
Title Titles can be superimposed over portions of
clips or added over black as a separate clip. 1.
Click the clip in the clip viewer or the timeline
viewer. 2. Click the Titles button. 3. Select a
title style from the list in the Titles pane. 4.
Type the text for your title into the text field
or fields at the bottom of the Titles pane. 5. If
you want the title over a clip leave be sure the
box labeled Over Black is left unchecked. 6. If
you want the title to be over black, select the
Over Black checkbox. 7. Click the Color picker
and choose a color for the text. 8. Select a font
for your title from the font pop-up menu. 9.
Adjust the size of the font with the scroll
bar. 10. Adjust the Speed and/or Pause sliders to
speed up or slow down the effect. 11. Change the
direction of title scroll for the styling effect
(i.e. rolling credits) 12. Drag the title from
the Titles pane to the viewer. Place the title
before the clip you want it to appear over. Note
Titles must be placed before or after clips.
B. Editing an Existing Title 1. Select the title
clip in the clip viewer. 2. Click the Titles
button. 3. Make the modifications. 4. Click the
Update button in the Titles pane.
Quick Tip When you edit video clips, the junk
gets placed into the trash. Click here
periodically to clear the junk files. This will
help your movie run smoothly.
18iMovie Environment - Transitions
- Adding Scene Transitions
- Transitions create a smooth entrance and exit
between clips. Transitions can be added to the
beginning, or end of a movie, or between two
video clips. - To add a transition, click the trans button in
the Editing Effects Menu. - 2. Choose a transition from the transition
palette. - 3. Use the speed slider (In the Transitions pane)
to modify the speed of the transition into or out
of the clip. - Note Slower transitions will take more time to
render - 4. Click an arrow to choose the transition
direction, if available. - 5. Drag the transition from the palette to the
desired location in the timeline viewer. - A transition icon will appear between the two
clips, and a progress bar will appear under it. - The transition is done rendering when the
progress bar disappears.
19iMovie Environment - Exporting
Once you have your movie created in iMovie, you
can export the final movie to a DV camcorder or
QuickTime file. Exporting to Tape 1. Connect
your DV device to your computer with your Fire
Wire cable. 2. Put in the tape you want to record
to. 3. Choose File gt Export Movie. 4. Choose
Camera from the dialog box. 5. Click the Export
button. Note Be aware that exporting
overwrites the current tape.
Exporting to a QuickTime File 1. Choose File gt
Export Movie. 2. Choose Quick Time from the
dialog box. 3. Select a movie format from the
Formats dialog box. 4. Click Export. 5. Name the
movie and choose a destination for the file. 6.
Click Save.

- QuickTime Movie Formats
- Email Movie, Small creates a small movie file
optimized for sending over e-mail. Person - viewing must have Quick Time 4.0 or later.
- Web Movie, Small creates a movie optimized for
playback over the WWW. Person viewing - must have QuickTime 4.0 or later. Click the
QuickTime 4.0 compatible checkbox to create a - QuickTime 3.0 movie instead.
- Streaming Web Movie, Small prepares the movie
for posting on a QuickTime compatible - streaming Web server.
- CD-ROM Movie, Medium creates a movie
optimized for playback from slower CD-ROM - drives.
- Full Quality, Large creates a high-quality
movie, preserving the most data possible. Use for - creating movies to import into other applications
for further editing. - Expert uses custom Quick Time settings based on
user input.
