- Internship Program University Buy-in
- To provide tuition waivers to accompany student
fellowships (when policy allows) - To increase the number of SLP slots rather than
re-allocating existing SLP slots to internship
slots in participating programs - To re-organize their academic/clinical programs
as needed to accelerate student progress in their
program through the first three semesters on
campus - To provide distance-learning coursework to
interns so second year interns can complete their
educational and clinical requirements from
off-campus
24University SLP Programs
- Obtain a minimum of 75 clock hours of clinical
experience to be consistent with the population
to be served and work setting. Required by Ohio
Board of Speech Language Pathology Audiology to
be issued a student permit - Late spring of the first year, the student has a
formal interview with the school district they
have been placed in by the OMNIE Project
Coordinator.
25School Districts
- Provide 25,000 in student support for each year
of internship - Provide health insurance for the intern
- Provide payments to the State Teachers
Retirement System - Provide supervision for the intern as required by
ASHA which is approximately 4 hours per week of
direct contact with a supervisor - Abide by the requirement of the licensure board
under the student permit - Provide and high quality working environment for
the intern

- Two days per week are considered student
teaching days for the intern. Clock hours are
obtained over these 2 days each week. - Students participate in frequent on-line chats
with the university coordinator to monitor their
progress and discuss common issues. - Feedback from district supervisors has been
positive with comments such as Student is
well-prepared and a self-starter Student
demonstrates strong application of skills in
therapy and is comfortable in the classroom.
Student is a good fit with our school team. - As some universities have a 2 year internship,
the students have a 4 commitment to the school
district in combination of internship and
employment as a fully licensed SLP.

32University SLP Programs
- The participating Oho Universities have agreed
- To participate in the design and delivery of a
relevant curriculum for 3 cohorts, matriculating
January 2007, 2008, and 2009. - To offer some of their faculty to deliver
required coursework. Each course will be
delivered 3 times. Each university can choose
their level of involvement. - To provide distance learning platforms for
delivery of anytime-anywhere instruction.
Examples include Blackboard, Carmen, Springboard
and WebCT.
33University SLP Programs
- Two universities (one located in the north and
one located in the southern part of the state)
review applications and matriculate students. - No more than 18 students will be enrolled in each
program. - The two universities coordinate student advising,
monitor academic and clinical skills development
as well as place and monitor students in
practicum sites. - Practicum placements are made in the area of the
state where the students live.
34Distance Learning Student Commitments
- To successfully complete the academic and
practicum requirements to meet each universities
standards, ASHA and OBSPA requirements. - Sign a letter of intent to seek and accept two
years of school-based employment following
program completion. - 10,000 tuition reimbursement provided mid-way
