Title: Universit Libre de Bruxelles

1
  • Université Libre de Bruxelles
  • Que sera le futur de lInternet?
  • Paul VAN BINST
  • vanbinst_at_helios.iihe.ac.be
  • www.iihe.ac.be

2
TODAY...
  • Encounter / collision / merge
  • (essentially unplanned / unexpected) of
  • gt the Internet (and the Web)
  • gt the GSM (and the Laptop and the Palmtop)
  • gt New tools, new applications and services
  • (eg. Internet telephony, WAP, I-mode, MMS)
  • gt New behaviours, new businesses

3
How many devices?
  • 1 billion wired telephones
  • 1 billion wireless telephones
  • 1.5 billion TVs
  • 700 million VCRs
  • about 500 million PCs ?
  • 2.5 billion radios/watches
  • 6 billion people with glasses, clothes, ...

4
Tomorrow...
  • Encounter / collision / merge with two other
    worlds
  • RADIO and TELEVISION
  • (and their content providers)
  • Location based services (GPS, GSM, )
  • Authentication / Privacy / Security

5
Interesting New Trends
  • IPv6 128 bits of addresses (about 40 digits)
    see www.ipv6tf.be
  • Home networking
  • Mobile (interactive?) TV
  • Charging and QoS

6
So many networks...
  • Backbone networks (WANs),
  • Local area networks (LANs)
  • and access networks
  • All wired or wireless

7
(Wired) Backbone networks
  • Telephone network, leased lines
  • Internet
  • Private networks Entreprise network, Virtual
    private network (VPN), Intranet, Extranet
  • Fiber ? unlimited capacity (at a price which
    is decreasing steadily)
  • The main issue is Quality of Service (QoS)
effective data rate, availability, transit delay,
    jitter, ...

8
Local Area networks
  • Wired Ethernet omnipresent (802.3) 10 Mbps,
    100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, (10 Gbps)
  • Wireless Ethernet (802.11) about 100 m, 11 Mbps,
    (22 Mbps, 55 Mbps)
  • New wireless alternative Bluetooth piconet
Personal Area Network, about 10 m, 700 Kbps
  • Both could become an alternative to wireless
access networks in the public domain (Hotspot)

9
Wired access networks
  • Copper twisted pair (Telephone)
  • Modems (lt 64 Kbps)
  • ISDN (n x 64 Kbps D channel)
  • ADSL (1 Mbps / 64 Kbps) permanent connection
  • VDSL (13, 26, 52 Mbps)
  • Copper coax (CATV)
  • Today broadcast analog TV separate digital
    bi-directional asymetric data channel
  • Tomorrow digital TV (DVB), enhanced or
    interactive TV
  • Fiber not very developed yet - unlimited
    bandwidth

10
Wireless access networks
  • GSM modem (about 10 Kbps)
  • GSM HSCSD (about 50 Kbps?)
  • GSM GPRS (about 50 Kbps?) permanent
    connection
  • Allow mobile Internet access (WAP, I-Mode)
  • GSM 3G (Third generation), UMTS, IMT-2000 (a
    few 100s Kbps?) allow video

Applications
  • web browsing
  • playing audio
  • listening to the radio online
  • vic and rat over IPv4/IPv6
  • chat
  • and more...

15
The Future IPv6?
  • IPv6 is the Internet Protocol next generation
developed to replace IPv4 which is causing an
    Internet addresses shortage
  • IPv6 solves the IPv4 address limitation by
extending addressing from 32 to 128 bits

16
Conclusions on IPv6
  • IPv6 technology is maturing products are
becoming available and expertise is improving
  • Interoperability with the existing Internet will
    not be simple
  • The Future Internet might be so much larger than
the present one ( you aint see nothin yet
mobiles, home appliances, clothes, toys, )
  • IPv6 has become a political agenda item
  • Europe, Japan, China?

17
Conclusions on the Future
  • More devices, more mobility
  • More connectivity,  ambient intelligence
  • Internet in the home, car, train, plane,
  • Internet on or in the body
