  • In 1800 the United Stated included 16 States-
    located on east coast.
  • The population growth of the US exploded rapidly
    after 1803-
  • Every mile and area of new territory was a new
    land and wonders

Westward Growth
  • 1803 Thomas Jefferson doubled the nations size
    by signing the LOUISIANA PURCHASE
  • 1828 Andrew Jackson the Peoples President
    ushered in the era on the COMMON MAN.
  • 1838 Indian removal and the Trail of Tears
  • Over 4,000 Native Americans died
  • The Monroe Doctrine stated that no European
    Countries should not intervene in Latin and North
    American issues

  • Writers valued imagination over reason and
    intuition over facts-
  • Writers wrote about nature and the adventures on
    the common man
  • Authors include- Washington Irving, James
    Fenimore Cooper, William Cullen Bryant and Edgar
    Allan Poe

  • Renaissance- comes from the Latin word rinascere
    to be REBORN.
  • A rebirth of culture and ideas.
  • A movement toward literature and nature.

  • A philosophy based on the belief that knowledge
    is not limited to and solely derived from
    experience and observation. They believed that
    the solution to human problems lies in the free
    development of individual emotions.
  • This intellectual movement directly or indirectly
    affected most of the writers of this period.
    They also believed that the human senses can know
    only the physical reality.
