Mission
  • Enhance the application and use of information
    technology for teaching, research, scholarship
    and learning consistent with the strategic plans
    of the School of Medicine.
  • Provide leadership in the use of information
    technology.
  • Support academic, administrative business
    applications and processes
  • Design, develop, and help to select and implement
    information systems in support of departments.
  • Create and maintain interrelationships between
    the School and other institutional organizations
    using and providing IT related services
  • Assist the School to effectively plan for the use
    of current and future technologies.
  • This mission will be accomplished through the
    delivery of efficient and collaborative support
    and services fostered by the development of
    innovative and proactive information technology
    expertise.

Primary Objectives
  • Oversee operations and manage IT
    resourcesdevelop organizational structure,
    policy and standards to meet the needs of School
    units.
  • Work collaboratively with School units to deploy
    service models maintain departmental focus and
    take advantage of cost efficiencies.
  • Provide oversight and direction to departmental
    IS personnel where needed and desirable.
  • Provide computing resources and expertise to
    faculty in developing computerized and multimedia
    educational programs.
  • Work with the Office of Research to enhance
    research information systems and implementation
    of electronic research initiatives.
  • Work with remote/non-Emory locations to provide
    connectivity to Emory University.
  • Establish cooperative and collaborative
    relationships with Emory-AAIT and EHC-IS.

Infrastructure
  • Desktop Support
  • Departments are responsible for providing IT
    support. SOM ITS provides system support via
    contracts and SLAs to units without support
    mechanisms
  • Server Support
  • SOM ITS maintains file, web, database, and
    application servers available to administrative
    areas and departments based on SLAs
  • Domain Management
  • EMORYUNIVAD resources available to all School
    departments and can be managed locally
  • SOM manages three (3) domains

  • ALife, WebCAMP (GCRC), Ingenix (EMCF), SiteMinder
    (CTO)
  • Grady Campus Support Services
  • Connectivity, desktop services, audiovisual

Academic and Instructional Support
  • Manage student computer labs and teaching
    facilities at Emory and Grady.
  • Participate in student orientation programs.
  • Support of existing facilities for audiovisual
    and multimedia requests at Emory and Grady
    campuses.
  • Technology integration into new Medical Education
    Curriculum.
  • Planning and support of infrastructure in new
    Medical Education Building supporting the
    curricular vision.
  • Creation of curriculum management and knowledge
    map.
  • Develop and enhance applications in support of
    student registration, enrollment and admissions
    process.
  • Collaborate with Office of Medical Education, the
    Health Sciences Library and Emory Center for
    Instructional Technology (ECIT) for streaming and
    video services, Learnlink, Blackboard and etc.

Research Computing
  • Manage resources on academic and healthcare
    networks depending on need and security
    requirements.
  • Coordinate with BIMCORE, EmoryHealthcare, AAIT
    and research units within School.
  • Support of research departments based on SLAs.
  • WCI (Unix, Linux, Windows, etc.)
  • Administrative research support.
  • GSIMS, eSubmissions, CTSA, Core Lab support, VCap

What we do in a typical dayConnectivity,
Desktop and Audio-Visual
  • React to Grady, EHC-IS and AAIT network and
    security upgrades, outages etc., that impact our
    faculty and staff.
  • Maintain standard desktop images and hardware
    recommendations.
  • Provide written documentation of procedures and
    policies related to network connectivity and
    systems access.
  • Maintain inventory most existing Emory desktop
    systems at Grady.
  • Provide departments service for voice and data
    moves, installs and relocations.
  • Assist and support the Emory faculty and staff
    migration from various areas within Grady
    Hospital to the new Emory Faculty Office
    Building, Steiner and other internal moves.
  • Approximately 400 Emory systems on the Grady
    campus configured for access to Emory, Grady and
    remote resources.
  • Departments who have utilized ITS services are
    Emergency Medicine, General Medicine,
    Rehabilitation Medicine, FPM, Health Sciences
    Library, Psychiatry, Pathology, GYN-OB, EMCF,
    Neurology, Orthopedics, Radiology, Urology,
    Endocrinology, Deans office among other.
  • Provide group and individual training sessions to
    faculty, staff and residents in the use of
    applications, audio-visual equipment and etc.
  • Provide O/S, server and database support to
    Diabetic Unit, WCI, and the EMCF Ingenix
    application.

FY07 Initiatives
  • Establish IT Advisory committee and work with
    departments developing resources to improve
    networking, server management, application and
    web development.
  • SOM roadmap for integration into the new IT
    governance process.
  • Completion of security standards, policies, and
    procedures for federal requirements.
  • HIPAA, FERPA, Sarbanes Oxley, etc.
  • Improve integration of departmental and central
    systems minimizing efforts in data
    reconciliation. Work with Office of Business and
    Finance and Departments to investigate, select
    and deploy efficient systems/process
  • Budget and salary submission processes
  • Compliance systems
  • Decision support

  • Centralized storage solution for administrative
    and research applications
  • Seamless access regardless of physical location
  • Authentication built upon existing AAIT/EHc
    mechanisms but flexible enough for new identity
    management
  • Support for integration of technology into new
    curriculum
  • Faculty/staff training for enhanced capabilities
  • Increased support personnel for incorporating new
    technologies into new delivery structure
  • Collaborative effort to develop a new
    enterprise-wide service model to support our
    Faculty and staff at both Emory and the Grady
    campus.
  • Promotes a strategic approach for IT services.
  • Current decentralized model impedes a unified
    service offering.
  • Offers well defined and consistent levels of
    service to Emory faculty and staff across the
    enterprise embracing standards.
  • Assumes a central support model with well defined
    and perpetual funding mechanisms.
