• About the seminar Purpose Assessment

About the seminar

• focuses on ways to broaden your technical
  vocabulary to assist you in following lectures,
  taking notes, reading articles/books etc.
  writing technical documents within the field of
  computer science
• focuses on collaborative effort of students from
  3 classes to present a list of about 60 technical
  vocabulary words within the field of computer
  science
• 20 of these words will be selected for assessment
  purposes

Purpose

• By the end of the seminar, you should
• be able to
• accurately use and understand at least 20
  technical vocabulary words within the field of
  computer science/bioinformatics
• improve your knowledge and understanding of
  technical vocabulary words within the field of
  computer science/bioinformatics

Assessment Vocabulary presentations

• What?
• conduct a 5 minute powerpoint presentation on 2
  technical vocabulary words within the field of
  computer science
• Why?
• to increase your technical vocabulary within the
  field of computer science
• How?
• Each technical vocabulary word must be presented
  in this manner
• 1. the word or expression2. the part of
  speech (and if it is a noun, whether it is
  countable or non
• countable)3. a definition of the word
  and at least one synonym and an antonym (they
  will
• help you remember the words)3. the
  word used in the context of a sentence.
• Each powerpoint presentation is to be submitted
  to your consultant. If there are similar
  presentation words used by two or more students,
  your consultant coordinator will decide who
  gets to present the words and who needs to find
  other words.
• Note Some of your presentations may be adapted
  and used to form the vocabulary test.
• So, it will be useful to take down
  notes as your classmates are presenting.
• A list of words to learn will be given
  at the end of the seminar.

• Chosen vocabulary words
• Tested on 20 of all the vocabulary words
  contributed

Assessment Criteria Value

• accuracy of words presented
• presentation skills
• vocabulary presentation individually graded _at_ 5
  as part of the participation grade
• accuracy of words in terms of grammar content
  when providing definitions/meanings
• each word used in the context of a sentence must
  be grammatically accurate
• test individually graded _at_ 20

Assessment Submission format

• submit the powerpoint presentation (hard soft
  copies) of the 2 technical vocabulary words
  within the field of computer science to your
  consultant
