5The Importance of Science
Science Fire management plans and programs will
be based on a foundation of sound science. . .
Scientific results must be made available to
managers in a timely manner and must be used in
the development of land management plans, fire
management plans, and implementation plans.

6 Fire Research And Management Exchange System
7Mission Statement FRAMES supports wildland fire
and natural resource professionals and
policymakers, by promoting and facilitating
information and technology sharing, exchange,
collaboration, and development through a
state-of-the-art clearinghouse and web
portal primary users are researchers, who
provide the scientific basis for wildland fire
management, and wildland fire and natural
resource managers / practitioners, who need
state-of-the-art research, information, tools,
and data to assist their daily efforts.
FRAMES Strategic Plan 2007-2012

26Geographically defined as the same 13 states of
the Southern Area Coordination Center (SACC)
27Texas Oklahoma Louisiana Arkansas Mississippi Alab
ama Florida Georgia South Carolina North
Carolina Tennessee Kentucky Virginia
28- SACC manages wildland fire and other incident
management activities in collaboration with the
10 other coordination centers in the United
States. - The SFP supports SACC by providing a single point
access to fire related publications, datasets,
databases, decision-support tools, models and
state-of-the-knowledge literature synthesis in
support of fire and natural resource management
fore the southern United States is the goal of
the SFP.
How?
? Through leveraging partnership expertise
29- Tall Timbers Research Station (TTRS)
- The E.V. Komarek Fire Ecology Database developed
by Tall Timbers, provides access to over 18,000
bibliographic citations pertaining to fire
ecology literature with emphasis on the
southeastern United States. - Our Fire Ecology Thesaurus provides extensive
indexing for out E.V. Komarek Fire Ecology
Database with over 1000 keywords including fire
terms, ecological terms, geographic and
physiographic designations, habitat types,
management types, and scientific names of plants
and animals.
30- The Nature Conservancy
- Identified and entered metadata about Joint Fire
Science Program and National Fire Plan projects,
and the resources created under each project into
the Southern Fire Portal Database of FRAMES. - Added key regional metadata about non-JFSP/NFP
projects in the southeast into the Southern Fire
Portal Database of FRAMES.
31- U.S. Forest Service
- Providing access to the Encyclopedia of Southern
Fire Science. - Providing access to the related content of the
Forest Encyclopedia Network.
- Encyclopedia of Southern Fire Science (ESFS)
- A compilation of synthesized information
(navigated text, photos, graphics, bibliography,
and fire science databases) developed by experts
on hundreds of fire science topics delivering
grounded information to practitioners and the
general public.
- Southern Regional Extension Forest office
- Promoting and advancing the Southern Fire Portal
and the many features that it offers and
expanding the ESFS.
32- U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
- Providing metadata creation services for regional
spatial and tabular data sets using the Federal
Geographic Data Committees Biological Data
Profile. - Facilitating coordination among partners with
respect to funding, contracts and communication.
33- National Biological Information Infrastructure
(NBII) - Providing metadata creation service for regional
spatial and tabular data sets using the Federal
Geographic Data Committees Biological Data
Profile. - Collaborating with the Tall Timbers Research
Station to incorporate fire ecology keywords into
the existing NBII Biocomplexity Thesaurus.
- NBII Southern Appalachian Information Node
(SAIN) - Working with The Nature Conservancy to add
metadata about JFSP and NFP projects and
associated resources into the Southern Fire
Portal Database of FRAMES. - Coordinating with Southern Fire organizations to
ensure growth of the SFP.
