• Pre Contact
• Before any Europeans ever came to North America,
  there were millions of Native peoples living
  there.
• Each Nation of peoples were as distinct as the
  region or area that they came from.
• Inuit People
• The Inuit are one of the largest ethnic groups
  living in Canada
• History dates back thousands of year.
• The difficult arctic geography presented many
  problems, many of which involved just staying
  warm.

The Inuit of Canada's Arctic live in one of the
most extreme climates in the world. Clothing has
been one of the keys to their survival. In
addition to physical protection, clothing has
also visually communicated information about who
they are as a people.

• Inuit Lifestyle
• The Inuit lived mostly along the northern coast
• sea mammals (like seal, walrus and whale) and
  fish made up most of their diet.
• Plants and fuel were scarce
• the Inuit used seal oil to provide them with
  small amounts of heat and light.
• Inuit Hunting
• hunting was important
• Inuit society was organized around small hunting
  groups.
• Inuit Social Structure
• The Inuit used patrilineal bonds (meaning wives
  and children took the males name)
• it was the male elders who guided the community.

Seal hunting was social pursuit. A number of
techniques were used, including harpooning in
open water, using a kayak, or at breathing holes
through the ice during the winter. Seals were
also taken with nets.
