Before you Sail
  • Make sure you have a
  • lifejacket that fits you
  • properly.
  • Notify someone you are
  • going sailing, and when you
  • plan on being back.
  • Bring water and sun block!
  • Check weather conditions
  • to make sure you and
  • your crew will be safe.

Steps for tacking
  • Tacking is when you change direction in a
    Sailboat.
  • 1. First look around you to make sure that their
  • are no other boats or objects around you.
  • 2. Notify crew by asking Ready About?
  • 3. The crew responds with Ready!
  • 4. Then, the skipper will say Hard-to-Lee as he
    or she is
  • In the process of turning.
  • 5. The skipper will switch to the high side, or
    the opposite side of the sail, and the crew will
    switch sides as well.

Bio Slide
  • I am a senior at Western Michigan University,
    studying Elementary Education, Early Childhood
    Education and minor in Math, Science and English.
  • I learned how to sail when I was 8 years old, in
    a youth 4-H sailing school in Charlevoix Michigan
    and have been teaching there for the last 5
    years.
  • I am originally from the Detroit area, and hope
    to stay in Michigan when I get a teaching job.
