Martinique helpful/ practical information
  • Camille K.

Transportation
  • The easiest way to get around Martinique is by
    renting a car.
  • There are also public buses and eight passenger
    mini-vans called taxis collectifs.
  • You could also go on a ferry so that you could
    enjoy the beautiful water.

3
Les Temps
  • The average temperature year round in Martinique
    is about 79 degrees.
  • There is only about a 5 degree temperature change
    between summer and winter.
  • Hurricanes can occur anytime between June and
    November.

4
Something to read before you go!
  • The Day the World Ended is a book about the
eruption of Mt. Pelée. It is by Gordon Thomas and
    Max Morgan Witts.

5
Customs and Entry
  • U.S., Canadian, and European citizens are advised
to have a valid passport. For citizens in other
countries a visa may be required.
  • No vaccination papers will be needed, unless you
are coming from an endemic place.
  • Items for personal use will not be taxed, unless
    its in excessive quantity.

6
Currency
  • The currency in Martinique is the Euro.
  • However, U.S. dollars, travelers checks, and
major credit cards are able to be used.
  • The value of the U.S. dollar and Euro are about
    the same.

7
Languages
  • The local language in Martinique is French.
  • Most islanders will use the Créole language
    among themselves though.
  • A French-to-English dictionary can be proved
helpful for those who dont speak French.

8
Safety so you enjoy Martinique!
  • Sunscreen is definitely a good idea to bring.
Mosquito repellent also proves handy. In shallow
water look out for sea urchins, jellyfish and
    sharp coral.
  • The Manchineel tree gives off a toxic sap, so
dont stand under one during rain. Dont try to
eat the green berries from this tree either.
These trees usually marked with red paint.
  • Tap water is drinkable in most places, but if
youre not sure try going with bottled water.

9
Time Zone
  • There is only a one hour difference between
Martinique and the east coast of the U.S.
  • Time is told in the French way, i.e. 2 pm is told
    as 14 hours.

10
Ways to Communicate
  • A phone card makes local and international calls
    much easier to make.
  • Postage stamps can be bought at the post office,
    cafés-tabacs, hotel newsstands, and souvenir
    shops.
  • The internet is not widely spread yet, but some
hotels will have the internet available.
  • If all else fails, a cell phone would always
    work.
