Teacher Quality Through the Equity Lens

often are assigned to the best teachers low
achievers as well as children of poverty
children of color often assigned to the least
    prepared teachers
  • New model Equitable school environments expand
the pool of top achievers since all children have
    access to the best teachers

  • Alternative routes to certification in place
  • Monitoring of LEA implementation in place
  • Specializes knowledge skills for teachers
    leaders
  • Working conditions that impact recruitment
    retention
  • Support through policy chg. collaboration

20
Teacher Quality Through the Equity Lens
  • Expectation that districts will select
    appropriate equity rubric indicators focus
efforts to move from adequate implementation to
    target implementation
  • This means moving from traditional approaches to
out-of-the box approaches to address equity issues

21
Teacher Quality Through the Equity Lens
  • Consider focusing on improving induction for
    teachers in years 1, 2, 3
  • Use learning community to create sustain
working conditions that increase holding power
  • Identify successful schools partner with these
    schools
  • Partner with universities community agencies

22
Teacher Quality Through the Equity Lens
  • Ron Edmonds, the father of the school
effectiveness movement, in the 1980s suggested
that we know everything that we need to know to
improve schools. We choose not to do these
    things.
  • Pogo, a famous opossum from the newspaper comics
said he had seen the enemy and the enemy is us.
We choose to place the blame elsewhere, usually
on the child, the parent, or the community.

23
Teacher Quality Through the Equity Lens
  • As we create a new equity plan for Georgia, the
PSC and the GaDOE will provide support for
district efforts to improve teacher quality so
that all students have equitable opportunities to
be taught by the best teachers. We look forward
to working with you as you create and implement
    your district equity plans.
