processing companies
- Polands entry to the EU opened new opportunities
for the food sector - Polish food processing companies can now target
ca. 450 mln consumers in the EU - EU funds allow for easier restructuring and
modernization of the local food industry
Polands food sector companies spent 7.5 bln on
investment in 2007, by 400 mln more than in 2006 - The EU market accounted for 80 of Polands
total food export in 2007 export is one of the
main factors driving the food sector after EU
accession

- The value of the food sector production sales
grew by 7.4 to 153 bln PLN in 2007 - The demand for processed food grew on the
domestic market as well - Opportunities resulted in improvement of the
economic condition of ca. 66 of Polish food
companies (their gross profitability was 5.2,
net profitability was 4.25 in 2007).

- economic slowdown on foreign markets

requirements for food producers in the EU

- Baltic Sea fisheries
- There are 10 fishing ports of particular
importance West Coast Szczecin,
Swinoujscie/Dziwnów Mid Coast Kolobrzeg,
Darlowo, Ustka, Leba East Coast Gdynia,
Wladyslawowo, Jastarnia-Hel, Gdansk. - Polish fishermen on the Baltic Sea mainly fish
for 4 species cod, salmon, herring and sprat
(over 90 of all Polish catches in the Baltic
Sea). - Deep-sea fisheries
- Deep-sea fleet catches redfish, prawn, cod and
krill in areas surrounding Greenland and covered
by several international conventions. - Inland fisheries
- Fresh water fish production amounted to 51.8
thousand tons in 2007.

22Fish processing in Poland
- 242 processing plants authorized to trade fish
products in the EU entered into the register of
Chief Veterinary Inspectorate in March 2008. - Progress of fish processing has been noted in
recent years due to high domestic and export
demands. In 2007 total fish processing rose to
around 430 thousand tons (8 more than in 2006).
Production value rose by 12.5 up to 4.5 bln PLN. - Increased production was noted for all groups of
products (especially fresh fillets) except for
frozen fillets as well as frozen and smoked fish.
