Title: Servant Leadership

Servant Leadership
2
Servant Leadership
  • Luke 612-16
  • The Twelve Apostles
  • 12One of those days Jesus went out to a
mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying
to God. 13When morning came, he called his
disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom
he also designated apostles 14Simon (whom he
named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John,
Philip, Bartholomew, 15Matthew, Thomas, James son
of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot,
16Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who
    became a traitor.

3
Servant Leadership
  • Matthew 2016
  • 16"So the last will be first, and the first will
    be last."

4
Servant Leadership
  • I Timothy 31-13
  • Overseers and Deacons
  •  1Here is a trustworthy saying If anyone sets
his heart on being an overseer,a he desires a
noble task. 2Now the overseer must be above
reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate,
    self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to
teach, 3not given to drunkenness, not violent but
gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

5
Servant Leadership
  • I Timothy 31-13
  • 4He must manage his own family well and see that
his children obey him with proper respect. 5(If
anyone does not know how to manage his own
family, how can he take care of God's church?)
6He must not be a recent convert, or he may
become conceited and fall under the same judgment
as the devil. 7He must also have a good
reputation with outsiders, so that he will not
fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap.

6
Servant Leadership
  • I Timothy 31-13
  • 8Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of
respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and
not pursuing dishonest gain. 9They must keep hold
of the deep truths of the faith with a clear
conscience. 10They must first be tested and then
if there is nothing against them, let them serve
    as deacons.
  •  11In the same way, their wivesb are to be
women worthy of respect, not malicious talkers
but temperate and trustworthy in everything.

7
Servant Leadership
  • I Timothy 31-13
  • 12A deacon must be the husband of but one wife
and must manage his children and his household
well. 13Those who have served well gain an
excellent standing and great assurance in their
    faith in Christ Jesus.

8
Servant Leadership
  • Acts 1421-23
  • The Return to Antioch in Syria
  •  21They preached the good news in that city and
won a large number of disciples. Then they
returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch,
    22strengthening the disciples and encouraging
them to remain true to the faith. "We must go
through many hardships to enter the kingdom of
God," they said. 23Paul and Barnabas appointed
eldersa for them in each church and, with
prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord,
in whom they had put their trust.

9
Servant Leadership
When God chooses, He looks at the heart, the
attitude, the character, and the motivation of
the person.
10
Servant Leadership
  • Matthew 58
  •  8Blessed are the pure in heart,       for they
    will see God.

11
Servant Leadership
  • I Samuel 161-13
  • 1 The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you
mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king
over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on
your way I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem.
I have chosen one of his sons to be king."  2 But
Samuel said, "How can I go? Saul will hear about
it and kill me. The LORD said, "Take a heifer
with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to
the LORD.' 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I
will show you what to do. You are to anoint for
me the one I indicate."  4 Samuel did what the
LORD said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the
elders of the town trembled when they met him.
They asked, "Do you come in peace?"

12
Servant Leadership
  • I Samuel 161-13
  •  5 Samuel replied, "Yes, in peace I have come to
sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and
come to the sacrifice with me." Then he
consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them
    to the sacrifice.
  • 6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and
thought, "Surely the LORD's anointed stands here
    before the LORD."
  •  7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider
his appearance or his height, for I have rejected
him. The LORD does not look at the things man
looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance,
but the LORD looks at the heart."

13
Servant Leadership
  • I Samuel 161-13
  •  8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in
front of Samuel. But Samuel said, "The LORD has
not chosen this one either." 9 Jesse then had
Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, "Nor has the
LORD chosen this one." 10 Jesse had seven of his
sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him,
"The LORD has not chosen these." 11 So he asked
Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?"
"There is still the youngest," Jesse
answered, "but he is tending the sheep."
Samuel said, "Send for him we will not
sit down a until he arrives."

14
Servant Leadership
  • I Samuel 161-13
  •  12 So he sent and had him brought in. He was
ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome
features.       Then the LORD said, "Rise and
anoint him he is the one."
  •  13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed
him in the presence of his brothers, and from
that day on the Spirit of the LORD came upon
David in power. Samuel then went to Ramah.

15
Servant Leadership
  • Acts 1321-22
  • Then the people asked for a king, and he gave
them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,
who ruled forty years. 22After removing Saul, he
made David their king. He testified concerning
him 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after
my own heart he will do everything I want him to
    do.'

16
Servant Leadership
  • Acts 1336
  •  36"For when David had served God's purpose in
his own generation, he fell asleep he was buried
with his fathers and his body decayed.

  • 20Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus
with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor
of him.  21"What is it you want?" he asked.
She said, "Grant that one of these two
sons of mine may sit at your right and the other
at your left in your kingdom."
  •  22"You don't know what you are asking," Jesus
said to them. "Can you drink the cup I am going
to drink?"       "We can," they answered.

18
Servanthood
  • Main text Matthew 2020-28
  • 23Jesus said to them, "You will indeed drink from
my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for
me to grant. These places belong to those for
whom they have been prepared by my Father."
  •  24When the ten heard about this, they were
indignant with the two brothers. 25Jesus called
them together and said, "You know that the rulers
of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high
    officials exercise authority over them.

  • 26Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to
become great among you must be your servant,
27and whoever wants to be first must be your
slave 28just as the Son of Man did not come to
be served, but to serve, and to give his life as
    a ransom for many."

  • 1.) Submissive Willingness to be under someone
    not out of compulsion

  • Luke 923
  • I Peter 55-7

21
Servanthood
  • Matthew 721-23
  • 21"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,'
will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who
does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord,
did we not prophesy in your name, and in your
name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'
23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew
you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

22
Servanthood
  • Luke 923
  • 23Then he said to them all "If anyone would come
after me, he must deny himself and take up his
    cross daily and follow me.

Servanthood
  • I Peter 55-7
  •  5Young men, in the same way be submissive to
those who are older. All of you, clothe
yourselves with humility toward one another,
because,    "God opposes the proud       but
gives grace to the humble."a 6Humble
yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand,
that he may lift you up in due time. 7Cast all
your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

  • Luke 176-10
  •  6He replied, "If you have faith as small as a
mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree,
'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will
    obey you.
  •  7"Suppose one of you had a servant plowing or
looking after the sheep. Would he say to the
servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come
along now and sit down to eat'? 8Would he not
rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself
ready and wait on me while I eat and drink after
that you may eat and drink'?

27
Servanthood
  • Luke 176-10
  •  9Would he thank the servant because he did what
he was told to do? 10So you also, when you have
done everything you were told to do, should say,
'We are unworthy servants we have only done our
    duty.' "

  • Matthew 61-4
  •  1"Be careful not to do your 'acts of
righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If
you do, you will have no reward from your Father
in heaven.  2"So when you give to the needy, do
not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites
do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be
honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have
received their reward in full. 3But when you give
to the needy, do not let your left hand know what
your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving
may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what
is done in secret, will reward you.

  • 1If you have any encouragement from being united
with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any
fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and
compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being
like-minded, having the same love, being one in
spirit and purpose. 3Do nothing out of selfish
ambition or vain conceit, but in humility
consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of
you should look not only to your own interests,

  • Matthew 181-3
  •  1At that time the disciples came to Jesus and
asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of
heaven?"  2He called a little child and had him

feast, do not take the place of honor, for a
person more distinguished than you may have been
invited. 9If so, the host who invited both of you
will come and say to you, 'Give this man your
seat.' Then, humiliated, you will have to take
    the least important place.

place, so that when your host comes, he will say
to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then
you will be honored in the presence of all your
fellow guests. 11For everyone who exalts himself
will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will
    be exalted."

  • Ephesians 41-3
  •  1As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to
live a life worthy of the calling you have
received. 2Be completely humble and gentle be
patient, bearing with one another in love. 3Make
every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit
    through the bond of peace.

Servanthood
  • I Peter 31-5
  • Wives and Husbands
  •  1Wives, in the same way be submissive to your
husbands so that, if any of them do not believe
the word, they may be won over without words by
the behavior of their wives, 2when they see the
purity and reverence of your lives.

44
Servanthood
  • I Peter 31-5
  • 3Your beauty should not come from outward
adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing
of gold jewelry and fine clothes. 4Instead, it
should be that of your inner self, the unfading
beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of
great worth in God's sight. 5For this is the way
the holy women of the past who put their hope in
God used to make themselves beautiful. They were
    submissive to their own husbands.

who also will share in the glory to be revealed
2Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your
care, serving as overseersnot because you must,
but because you are willing, as God wants you to
be not greedy for money, but eager to serve
