Title: A SERVANT HEART

1
A SERVANT HEART FOR MISSION IN CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS
2
Our mission is to
  • Spread the gospel
  • Pass the baton of leadership on to the next
    generation
  • Be encouraged that despite anything to the
contrary we have the promise of His presence with
    us.

3
Matthew 1413-34
  • When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew
by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of
this, the crowds followed him on foot from the
towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd,
he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
  • As evening approached, the disciples
came to him and said, "This is a remote place,
and it's already getting late. Send the crowds
away, so they can go to the villages and buy
    themselves some food.
  • Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away.
You give them something to eat.
  • "We have here only five loaves of bread and two
    fish," they answered.
  • "Bring them here to me," he said. And he
directed the people to sit down on the grass.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and
looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke
the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples,
and the disciples gave them to the people. They
all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples
picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that
were left over. The number of those who ate was
about five thousand men, besides women and
    children.

Matthew 1413-34
  • Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into
the boat and go on ahead of him to the other
side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had
dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by
himself to pray. When evening came, he was there
alone, but the boat was already a considerable
distance from land, buffeted by the waves because
    the wind was against it.
  • During the fourth watch of the night Jesus
went out to them, walking on the lake. When the
disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were
terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried
    out in fear.
  • But Jesus immediately said to them
"Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.
  • "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied,
"tell me to come to you on the water. "Come," he
said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked
on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he
saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to
sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!
  • Immediately Jesus reached out his
hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he
    said, "why did you doubt?
  • And when they climbed into the boat,
the wind died down. Then those who were in the
boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the
    Son of God.
  • When they had crossed over, they landed
at Gennesaret. And when the men of that place
recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the
surrounding country. People brought all their
sick to him and begged him to let the sick just
touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched
    him were healed.

conduct and from it there can be no appeal.

Jesus three attitudes
  • His heart of compassion for the lost. (Go make
    disciples...)
  • His commitment to developing servant leadership
in His disciples. (Teaching them to obey
    everything I have commanded)
  • His longing for his children to have a strong
robust Faith and. (I am with you always)

8
  • He saw, he felt, he acted. The movement was
from the eye to the heart, and from the heart to
the hand. His compassion was always aroused by
the sight of need, and it always led to
    constructive action.

14
A commitment to developing servant leadership in
his disciples
  • Who is serving whom in our schools?
  • Whom do we depend on to get the job done?
  • Are we modelling the way?
  • What does our prayer life look like?

15
  • The servant at the bottom of the totem pole was
expected to be the one on his knees with the
towel and basin. In this case the one with the
towel and basin is the king of the universe.
Hands that shaped stars now wash away filth.
Fingers that formed mountains now massage toes.
And the one before whom all nations will one day
kneel now kneels before his disciples.

Developing a strong and robust faith in his
disciples
  • He makes them do things that will stretch them
  • He encourages them to operate by faith and not
    sight
  • He encourages them to encourage others
  • He entices them out of their comfort zone
  • He causes them to go the extra mile (literally at
    times!).

19

common they must be stretched to be effective.

  • You intended to harm me, but God intended it for
good to accomplish what is now being done, the
    saving of many lives.
  • Genesis 5020

22
  • We were under great pressure, far beyond our
ability to endure, so that we despaired even of
life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence
of death. But this happened that we might not
rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the
dead. He has delivered us from such a deadly
peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have
set our hope that he will continue to deliver
    us.

  • What is your boat? Your boat is whatever you
are tempted to put your trust in, especially when
life gets a little stormy. Your boat is whatever
keeps you so comfortable that you dont want to
give it up even if its keeping you from joining
Jesus on the waves. Your boat is whatever pulls
you away from the high adventure of extreme
    discipleship.
