6Guidelines for oral presentations
- know audience, context
- develop story in logical fashion link sections
- concentrate concepts, avoid details
- (usually) deal with each theme as a unit
- present key ideas several ways
- kinna avoid, well sort of dont talk, I mean
discuss things.
7Guidelines cont.d
- avoid cute/rude humour
- use simple A/V aids some variety is good
- practice (with people)
- attend seminars
- be yourself
- dont apologize
8Audiovisual Aids
- Blackboards
- good for sequential explanations, small rooms
- Overheads
- often adequate (use correct font, orientation)
- use correct type for printer/copier
- 35 mm Slides
- not common now (arguably best quality)
- Video projectors (PowerPoint)
- very common watch compatibility
- resist complexity!
9General Considerations
- choose simple, consistent style
- thumb rules for slides
- no more than 8-10 lines/slide
- use short phrases, lists
- simplify published tables, figures, label clearly
- animation may be appropriate for more complex
figures/tables - acknowledge the work of others
10Preparing Your Talk
- decide on topic (audience, time, context)
- write preliminary outline
- prepare figs., tables etc.
- write more detailed outline (1 slide/min.)
- prepare paper/computer copy of talk before
committing to CD /web (Use spell check!!) - prepare slides, disk etc. and backup (web)
- practice, practice, practice (people)

12Actinobacillus suis Pathogen or Opportunist?
Janet MacInnes, University of Guelph
13Outline
- Background
- Population structure in swine, other species
- Cell surface esp. LPS
- Challenge studies, serum resistance
- Conclusions
- Acknowledgements
14Actinobacillus suis
- Typical gram negative bacterium, member of the
family Pasteurellaceae - requires complex medium
- haemolytic
- oxidase, catalaze, urease positive
- grows on MacConkey agar
- Isolated from
- pigs of various ages
- variety of birds, mammals
15Serum resistance
- Question Can the differences in virulence of O1
and O2 strains be explained by differences in
serum resistance? - Hypothesis A. suis O2 strains are more serum
resistant.
16Virulence studies
- Animals
- three test groups (n7)
- one PBS control group (n3)
- challenge by IP route (107 CFU/ml)
- Strains used
- O1/K1 (SO4)
- O1/K2 (C84)
- O2/K2 (H91-0380)

34Objectives
Before 3
35Objectives
After 3
- Long term objectives
- Determine the cellular functions of ORF1C and
ORF1 - Do ORF1C- or ORF1- FAdV-9 correlate to the
FAdV-9?4 in vivo phenotype? - Short term objectives
- Demonstrate that ORF1C protein is expressed in
cell culture - Determine ORF1C-host protein interactions
- Screen for BPV E5-like activities
- Screen for novel interactions
- Determine the subcellular location of ORF1C
protein in cell culture - ER, Golgi, plasma membrane
- Characterize ORF1C structurally and determine the
critical residues - Dimerization
- Mutational analysis
- Demonstrate that ORF1 (dUTPase) protein is
expressed in cell culture - Determine the importance of ORF1 (dUTPase) in
vivo.
36Curricula vitae
- styles vary greatly good books, web sites,
university resources - styles may be prescribed (e.g., CIHR)
- start a detailed academic curriculum vitae and
keep it up to date (e.g. put in pages for meeting
abstracts etc.) - spelling (and other niceties) count!!!
- should be tailored to situation
37Typical CV sections (A reminder)
- contact information
- education (place, dates, advisor/topic)
- relevant job (and other experience)
- professional certification
- (academic) awards
- publications (refereed, non-refereed, abstracts)
- names of referees (ask first)
- memberships in academic or professional societies
- (hobbies, other)
38CVs for speakers
- sections most often used are
- education (place, dates, advisor/topic)
- professional certification
- (big academic awards)
- publications (refereed, non-refereed, abstracts)
- relevant job (and other experience)
- names of referees
- memberships in academic or professional societies
- (hobbies, other)
39Posters
- increasingly common at meetings
- format requirements vary widely
- usually printed on a single page
- size/orientation counts!
- title and other requirements e.g. poster number
headings may be dictated - prepared using PowerPoint, CoralDRAW
- do rough sketch, prepare elements and import
- laminated posters are more durable
- remember your tacks or Velcro tape....
40General guidelines
- do not be afraid of using large text
- titles 90 to 150 point in bold
- text 30 to 32 point, sans serif
- upper and lower case vs. all upper case best
- dark text on light easiest to read contrast
- point form often appropriate esp. for conclusions
- usually 2 to 4 columns (use grids/margins)
- aim for 40 graphic content
- figs/tables minimum 5 X 7 inches, 300 dpi
- consider colour of graphics/using contrasting
blocks to set graphics off when choosing
background and title colours - graphic content can be 3D
