2
Camouflage
  • The way animals disguise themselves to blend
    into their surroundings.

3
Many reasons for camouflage
  • Way to survive
  • Marine animals use colors and ability to change
    colors
  • Warning
  • Calling attention to themselves for mating
  • Announcing social status
  • Trickery
  • Hiding among coral and plants
  • Sneaking up on prey

4
Marine Life
  • Some animals can change color instantly to blend
    in with their background.
  • Females are most blandly colored to be able to
    better protect their young.
  • Males are often brightly colored to attract
    females for mating.
  • Young fish are usually different colors than
their parents so that they can travel freely away
from the protection of their parents, among other
kinds of fish and be unharmed.

5
Marine life cont.
  • Many fish travel in groups known as schools.
  • Schools of fish can use themselves as well as
objects around them to camouflage themselves.
  • Much of marine life uses camouflaging when they
are resting (much like humans sleeping).

6
Ocean Objects/Life that Help Camouflage
  • Sand Allows sea life to bury themselves in it
  • Coral Reef Allows sea life to blend into its
    bright varied colors
  • Plant/Vegetation Allows sea life to blend in, as
    well as hide behind
  • Levels of Ocean Allows sea life to be
camouflaged in the lighter and darker levels of
    the sea

7
Countershading is a part of Camouflage
  • The ability for fish life to disguise parts of
their body according to the amount of light in
    the water/sea level
